LSU vs Washington 1983 - Newspaper Articles

It was September, 1983. The Australia II with its famous winged keel, beat the Liberty, taking the America's Cup away from the United States for the first time in history. Tom Osborne won his 100th game. Wally English was the head coach at Tulane with Jon English, his son, as the quarterback still playing despite not knowing if he was eligible. Interestingly, Tulane was forced to forfeit two wins (i.e. turned into losses for Tulane and wins for the opposition) one of which was previously a loss by Florida State and Bobby Bowden (which inevitably turned into a win for him) ... but that's another story.
The story here is unranked LSU playing 7th ranked Washington (7 UPI, 9 AP) in Baton Rouge, and giving them a spanking that still hurts to this day.

I seem to remember Don James saying something about wanting to be able to compete with SEC-caliber schools and how tough it was compared to the PAC-10 but I couldn't find that quote anywhere in these newspaper articles. Washington won the PAC-10 in '80 and '81. UCLA won it in '82 and '83
I'm thinking I may have read it later in the year, but that'd mean I'd have to look through every sports page from that game on until the end of the season. Maybe if I get really bored someday.

I was at that game. It was great. Huskies came into TS with that cocky PAC-10 type attitude and left on the short end of a good old country arse whipping.

The attendance of 82,390 at that game was 4,000 over the capacity at the time. I was not yet a student but was at the game. My sister was in the student section and said the aisles were so full that you could barely walk.
I believe that game led to students having to pick up tickets to get into the games to avoid overcrowding. The tickets were free the next season (my freshman year) and by the time I was a senior cost 2 or 3 dollars a piece. How much are they now for students? How times have changed.

Yea I remember it well it would be the highlight of a very disappointing year after having high expectations from the year before. Wickersham was very inconisitent had alot of yards but also a lot of picks.

Greek tickets this season were I believe $136 - still the only sport at LSU the students have to pay to see. They could charge double and still sale out easily.

It still hurts to this day? I don't remember the game. I read about it once about how much stuff the drunk lsu student section was throwing onto the UW players, including balloons full of piss. Lovely.

Yeah another, that is bullshite, I was at that game with my sister who was a student in the student section did not hear about or see anyone throwing balloons of piss, go drink some Starbuck's

My very 1st game in TS. i'll never forget it...i was actually sitting in the south endzone not far from the Washington fans. Yeah, i remember them having sort of a cocky attitude for opening kickoff, but their minds got right really quick. actually have that game on DVD.

I was at te game as well. One of my favorites in Tiger Stadium.
