Michael Phelps Dominance

When is the last time that we saw an athlete dominate like Phelps does? Realistically, this guy blows away just about everybody in every sport when it comes to dominating. After he gets 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, he takes 6 months off, then gets suspended for 3 more, comes back in March and pretty much blows everyone out of the water again with the exception of the 200m freestyle where the german guy was wearing the fastest synthetic suit available. Phelps didn't train much for that event and concentrated on the butterfly according to his coach. Phelps' trash mouth talking opponent Cavic in the 100m butterfly trained all year long on ONE race, wore the "super" suit and Phelps still beats him wearing his old suit and training for 3 months. You just gotta love this guy's tenacity, fight and brilliance in the pool. People can say what they want but Tiger Woods is nowhere near as dominant in golf as Phelps has been in the pool.

The only guy who can compete with Phelps is Usain Bolt at the 100 and 200 meter sprints. Considering how little Phelps has trained over the past year, his 5 golds and 1 silver while wearing an inferior suit are almost as impressive as his 8 gold medals last year.
If the guy spent as much time training as he did picking up mediocre strippers in Baltimore and playing online poker, he could have easily repeated his Olympic sweep in Rome.

If any of that is true, I sure as hell hope he doesn't end up like his old man.

Tiger and Jordan come closest imo.

Tiger wins about 25% of the time. Phelps wins probably 90% of the time. Not even close to being as dominant as Phelps.

Plus I meant Jordan and Tiger come closest to being as dominant LIKE Phelps is, not as dominant.

Nobody could touch Gretzky in his prime.

That's a REALLY terrible way to analyze that comparison

No way, not given the past few years.

Yeah, Federer has a clear competitor in Nadal. No one really competes with Phelps. I guess Cavic is his closest competitor, but I don't think he has ever beaten Phelps. The only guy who can compare to Phelps right now is Bolt, but he hasn't been around long enough. Also, he only really competes in two events, while Phelps does 5 solo events and has lost once in the last 4 years, and the guy who beat him admits that he only won because he was wearing a better bathing suit.

winning 3 majors in the past 2 years? Just the fact that he's been to 21 straight grand slam semis when the next closest in Lendl with 10 is a mind frick with the depth of competition now and the variance in surfaces being so great
And Nadal has really only become a true threat in the past 2 years. Before that he was worthless on hard courts.

you should change your handle to rantardman. bolt gets performance bonuses for breaking records so it would make HIM a rantard for setting the bar to high but he's not so it's all good.

I think that Federer is probably the greatest tennis player of all time considering his career grand slam and total number of titles, but when you compare him to Michael Phelps in terms of sheer dominance over the rest of the field, I don't think he can touch him. Especially considering that Nadal has emerged as such a strong rival in the past few years.

What about the complete dominance the several years before your time frame?
He is still very dominant.
Out of the last 19 Grand Slam events he has been the winner or the runner up 16 times.
