I agree with this. I mean, it wasn't bad, but I think it is way overrated. I thought The Wrestler was better.

The people who overhyped the movie to you probably had never seen any similar films before and this was their first glimpse at shitty life in the 3rd world. Realizing how awesome it is to be born in America instead of a place like India or Africa can have a strong emotional impact. If you're already aware of how lucky you are, it's just another international movie.

Slumdog was a decent movie but it's definitely benefitting from weak competition.
