No, I think he hasn't played up to most peoples expectations but he is far from a bust.

Given the hype (some of it self given), yeah.

I think last year was a big step for him before the injury killed his season. He was single-handedly keeping us in games (Minnesota) and making big plays on offense. Bush is probably the Saint I'm most excited about this year. I look for Payton to utilize him more effectively in the offense now that Pierre Thomas has solidified that every-down back role. This also allows Bush to return punts on a full time basis instead of just in spot duty.

It's funny how many Saints fans are quick to label Reggie a bust due to his injuries while at the same time praising Deuce McAllister (who missed roughly 40% of his career games due to injury) as the Greatest Saint of All Time.

He isn't worth the money he's getting, but it's rare that any Top 5 draft pick is worth the money they get.
When you take the entire situation into consideration (the renewed national and local interest in the Saints after Katrina), Bush is worth the #2 pick.
Answer to your question: No, he's not a bust.

Especially considering the guys who were drafted below him.

Not a bust. A bust is not just a player who doesn't live up to expectations. A bust is a player with HUGE expectations who then delivers zilch.
How is his hype "self given?"

What does Bush need to do this year to live up to his current expectations?
IMO: 500-600 rushing yards
500-600 receiving yards
2-3 return tds
6-10 receiving+rushing td's
I would be happy with those numbers every year. This is also considering the amount of time that opposing defenses spend planning for Bush and how him being in the game makes everyone around him better.

I'm so glad that PT has solidified the every down back role.

Is that why he was the #2 draft pick though??? I'm not going to say he is a bust, but he has disappointed me as a running back so far.

I think the plan all along has been to use him as a Jack-of-all-trades kind of player and not as a full time back. Granted, his rushing numbers so far have been mediocre at best, but if you look at his overall stats he's been a very important asset to our team.
As for being a #2 pick, I think you could only argue that a couple of the guys drafted below him have been more successful. Not a very strong draft.

Yeah, anyone who thought he was going to come to NOLA and be a tomlinson type back had their head firmly up their asses. He was drafted to be used as a weapon that can strike from various points on the field. He has done that. The only thing that has disappointed has been his injuries and his fumbles, not his rushing totals.

I think he was starting to run better right before he got hurt. He still has to learn to not run out of bounds and but I think he was learning to be patient and follow his blocks. I hope he continues to improve.

not a bust, but he would have had to be barry sanders, jim brown, etc. type players to live up to the hype

I agree with this. Way too overhyped coming out of college.

He was being compared to Gayle Sayers coming out of college. I think everyone knew he had good hands and wouldn't be like Tomlinson or AP, but they expected him to be a running back first and foremost.

I thought Deuce was the Saints' all-time leading rusher. At his current rate, Bush should overtake him in 2028.
Considering what he was expected to be, Bush has to be considered a bust. However, he's not a Jonathan Sullivan/Shawn Knight level bust and that does not mean his isn't a productive member of the team. I love having him on the team, but his production hasn't been worthy of where he was picked.

Where should he have gone in that draft? Who drafted below him has made a bigger impact to his particular team?
