Matty Ott's confidence

Do you think there was any reason to use Matty Ott in the last inning of last night's game? We had nothing to gain by having him throw, except to give him some work. Hopefully, his confidence wasn't shaken heading into the Finals. He ended on a good note against Virginia. Also, Texas got another look at him. Would've like to see Cain or others get some work.

We need to get our guys as much PT as we can so they have a feel for Omaha. Matty is a freshman and another inning of work may give him that comfort zone out there. He is a great pitcher and will hopefully fight back in our next games ahead of us.

im pretty confident if the score would have been 4-2 instead of 14-2 he would have been his old self. just getting him some work since he hadnt thrown live in 6 days. wouldnt worry about it

i like to think he was due for a bad outing because he has been hanging around the brink of allowing the big inning and he just got it out of the way in a game that it didn't hurt us...then i feel better

I felt like he probably needed the work, but only a short inning. I think his focus was probably lacking because it wasn't a save situation. Just my opinion.

You may have a point. Also, I noticed that the ump wasn't really giving him the corners on his pitches and I thought he may have been getting a little frustrated with that. He did walk a batter which is uncharacteristic of him, however, he still struck out two batters.

I think anytime you have the luxury of putting a freshman, one who will be needed when it is all on the line, on the field in Omahaux, you have A LOT to gain. This is the kid's first trip to Omahaux, he needs to be out there to minimize the angst of trotting out there in the top of the 9th, I say that because I believe we will take game 1 & game 2 will be the deal sealer!, & feeling comfortable out there. I liked that Coach Mainieri put guys out there, hitting, fielding, & pitching, to give them some CWS experience but also to put them on the field & give them some sense of "been there done that" should they be called upon in a pressure situation. Ott's performance kind of suprised me but I think that had a lot to do with not having to focus as hard with a 14-2 (or whatever the score was when he came in) cushion as he would if it were 3-2 top of the 9th (2nd game).
All in all, I ain't second guessing a damn thing our DAMN STRONG COACH does, remember, after only 3 years, he has this team DOMINATING Omahaux!

Closers never perform well in non closing situations.
The mindset changes and its just different.
Like the Alabama series, Ott came in when the game was way out of reach, and Alabama hit back to back to back homeruns in the 9th.
If the game is on the line, He will be ready to go.
One of the all time best closers ever, Mo Rivera, when he got put in non close situations, he didnt pitch that well either.
If Matty Ott is in the Finals, he will DEAL!

as bad as it sounds, this was good for matty, not saying he had a big head or anything, but being broken down like that is the thing that will make him the best pitcher in the nation

he had'nt pitched for a while, if i recall correctly. it was a good idea to get him out there. get that bad inning out of his system before the finals.

he just needed to pitch. And FWIW if it had been 4-2 when he came in it would have been 4-2 when he left.

also Arkansas has seen him before so they know his arm slots and pitches. UT's offense is poo and they have never seen him before. they wont know what to do.

I wouldn't worry about it. After he gave up the game-winning homer to ULL earlier in the year he came back really focused. I imagine he will be more locked in mentally than ever in his next game.

Winning response right here.
Ranaudo pitched like he had the red-arse on Friday. I think Ott will have the same approach when he sees the mound again.

Totally agree. He was told to throw strikes and not fool around due to the big lead. Those same pitches could just as easily have recorded outs. No big deal. That's just baseball. It will have no bearing on his next outing IMHO.

he had to throw, otherwise it would have potentially been 9 days between games for him. i thought he should have stayed in to finish. 14-5 is as close to a done deal as you are gonna get.
