"I was born and raised in Louisiana and I have been going to LSU games since I was a little boy," Bates said. "I didn't know what it took to play college football but I always said I wanted to play for LSU, but now that I'm here and I know what it takes, LSU is the place for me."

Definitely the first of many D1 talent to come out of Saint Pauls. Their football program has really taken off in the last five years. Hopefully this is the first of many SPS football players to go to LSU

Bates chose LSU over scholarship offers from Colorado, Louisiana Tech, Tulane, Tulsa, SMU and Florida International. He also received interest from Ole Miss and Arkansas.

"He said he was going to list me as an athlete and that he's not sure where he was going to play me. He said either at rush end or fullback or linebacker but that the most important thing was that I was going to be a Tiger."

He is pretty undersized for a DE, but last year in the playoffs he was going up against some pretty good OT's, and he showed some great explosiveness off the ball. He could make a pretty good linebacker
