Is there an easy way to hook it up to my wifi without buying Microsoft's $99 deal? Please help.

not many alternatives for wireless outside of xbox's wireless adapter..
Probably the best alternative to the network cable straight into the router is a Powerline Adapter. Unlike wireless at 54mb the newer Powerline adapters are 85mb and they plug into any wall power outlet. No worries about signal strength or distance.
They can be found at most stores but make sure its the 85mb ones and not the older 15mb.

and maybe..??

You can also "borrow" the existing wireless connection of your laptop computer. Simply by placing the laptop computer next to your Xbox 360 game console and connecting the two together with a standard ethernet cable, you can bridge your computer's connection from its wireless card to its LAN card and be gaming online in as little as five minutes.
here is a very well-written article on the alternatives. you may want to read this first.

Hardwired connection is the way to go. I despise wireless
Posted on 6/13/09 at 11:32 am to SG_Geaux
i agree completely. i got a 50 ft ethernet cord for when i want to play xbox live in my room.. but some people hate cords laying around or having to possibly drill in the house.

Hardwire is just not convenient in the location I've got the Xbox and the wall behind is a fire-safe wall so drilling/dropping a line is pretty tough. I've got to renew my Live membership this week but find that I don't use live but a couple times a year just because of the dragging the cable out deal.

Any wireless bridge should work...

It looks like some good alternatives have been posted already, but I ended up using the old wireless connection from original xbox. I had to update the firmware, but that was easy and you can get them pretty cheap; 35-40 bucks at the most.

You shouldn't have to bridge your connections as that can become a pain in the arse later down the road. The easier way to do the exact same thing is just to enable ICS, a.k.a "sharing", on your wirless connection. Just plug in your ethernet cord to your lappy and xbox and your good to go.
The reason I suggest this is that turning it off when you don't need it is just as easy as few simple clicks. Deleting a bridge does not always go over so well (at least in my experience).

No they won't. Because the majority of wireless USB devices need you to install drivers for them to work and there's no way to install drivers onto the 360.
I tried to find a wireless usb device that wouldn't need to install drivers and finally said frick it and bought the $99 xbox wireless.

So I just got a Linksys WRT54G router DD-WRT VPN on Ebay for $28. Hopefully it's the right one and I can get it to work on my 360.

I love having my wireless. I don't have to worry about the chord and can move it around the house freely.

I hate to tell you this brother, but yes they will. Its kind of a pain in the arse but it can be done with almost any USB adapter.

Ya see the only problem with that theory is that I bought my game system to play games and since there really aren't any on the PS3 then being online with nothing to do is kind of like dating your younger sister.
Yeah, I'm getting a PS3 sometime or another. Just hasn't been worth the effort yet.

Link to any guide or tutorial of some sort? I have a USB adapter laying around and I wouldn't mind giving it a try.

put your modem & wireless router by your tv and hard-wire your xbox (and put it in the dmz) for maximum pleasure.
Then you can buy a cheap-as-shite usb or pci wifi card for your PC in your office or other room.

eta the rest of y'all were all thinking about the problem the wrong way

If you have wireless internet in your house you can run it off of a laptop.
