Skip Bertman on ESPN Sat.

Did anybody catch his interview Sat. during the game, when a foul ball was hit in his direction and the announcer told him to watch out. Skip said he wasn't worried because some fan would jump in front of it and give up his body to protect him.

That was a pretty good interview, I had a good time listening to Ole Skip again. He has done so much for the sport of College Baseball.

Yeah, I caught that too. I thought it was maybe a little egotistical of him but he's probably exactly right. Was great to hear Skip talk about the team, the new field and all that.

Completely agree. Then I hear these numbnuts like "knuckle-head" on Buddy Songy today asking why Skip is on the field after the game. Saying that he has no right to be there and wishing he would just "go off into the sunset" and leave the university alone.
I wish ungrateful pieces of shite like that would just stay off of the radio because they make the fanbase as a whole look like a bunch of spoiled asshats.

The way he said it I took it to mean some fan would jump in front of him to get the ball, not necessarily to protest him.

they asked skip if he'd like to hang around...
he was like "Suuuure"
like he was going to turn down a chance to talk on live TV.
the guy will take over a telecast if you let him.

I took it to be a joke. Suggesting that he was so well loved that the fans would go all secret-service and take a ball for him. But maybe your right. Either way, great interview.

Ah the Skipper, all the wonderful things he has done for LSU baseball and college baseball in general can not be matched. We salute you!

That's exactly how I took it. Right after he said that, he kind of looked to somebody off camera and gave a little laugh. So I'm sure there is a little more to it than what we saw. Anyway, I thought it was comical as hell.

Yea, he did a good job of representing. Also, anyone who knows anything about college baseball knows he is a legand and would not question him doing whatever he wanted. He has earned that right.
It is also difficult to "ride off in the sunset" when you are the AD emeritus and still have strong ties to the university. That is like telling Shaq to stop coming back to LSU and parading around for football games or a retired professor to stop giving guest lectures.

What Skip did as an AD is another topic. Some will say that he was all about making money. Maybe they are right. While skip was AD I was in high school and LSU so I never had to pay the ticket prices, but what he did had to be done.
Why do you think they wanted him to be the AD in the first place? He was not a football guy like is usually the case. He had no AD experience. The reason is that LSU realized that in order to be competitive again in football, money needed to be raised. The ticket prices were so low before skip (compared to other successful SEC schools) and unlike most, there was no tradition fund. LSU was worried about what kind of fan reaction they would get if they started to suddenly raise prices and ask for a tradition fun on top of it. They asked skip to come in and be the one to do it. He was by far the most popular figure at LSU during this time and they knew that, at least for a little while, people might pay extra if he asked them to.
Like I said, I cannot comment on how much these price increases might have hurt some of our fans, but I know on thing for sure. LSU athletics is in MUCH better shape after skip than i was before him.

Ever met this asswipe IRL?
Seldom has a caller ever been more appropriately named.

No I have never met him but he seems like a real fun guy to hand around with.

that dickhole is still pissed off about his seats at the new box and that he thinks LSU made the new box "too nice" and that is why ticket and concession prices went up .. someone needs to tell the short, mustachioed little car mechanic that LSU baseball will survive just fine without him anytime he wants to stop coming ..
Posted on 6/8/09 at 3:11 pm to TigerBait414
as AD, skip did what LSU and TAF wanted him to do .. joe dean wasn't going to have his fingerprints on the TAF fees era in LSU football ... skip was perfect and LSU's gamble paid off .. he was still just enough in the limelight to float this past the fans ...

Also got to hear them praise Chris Guillot a few time Saturday. A real Tiger hero.
