Is the Quarter mandatory for dinner?

Stella if you can get reservations. I love RioMar/LaBoca in the Warehouse district (although not the quintessential New Orleans experience). Brigsten's uptown is great. It gets a lot of hate but Nola/Emerils are solid and dependable. K-Paul's/Cochon are solid casual dinner experiences. Sucre or Brocato's for a late coffee/dessert are always fun.

I love Central Grocery muffs and sitting by the river. Hope the weathers good for you. If it's crappy weather you eat at EAT on the fringe of FQ.

i think i am going to literally take all of your suggestions and draw them out of a hat .. btw, we are going all day fri, sat, sun, and monday, glass .. so we are just doing the quarter one day .. would love some suggestions from you guys on other parts of the city ... these are big art and museum buffs, btw ..

If you want the quarter, Stella is the best, but they might not be up for such a high end experience.
Pelican Club would be a my first choice, followed by Irenes.

Definateley hit up Rio Mar or La Boca. Both very close to your hotel.

For things to do:

NOMA for your arty friends would be a good call.
After you could go to Parkway for the best RB Po-Boy in the city for a casual lunch with dessert at Brocato's, great cannelonies and gelato.

Do a walking tour of Magazine Strret, great antique stores, shops and galleries. With lunch at Gott Gourmet or Ignatious(casual) or Lilette(higher end). The possibilities are almost endless. Have a great time.

It is a solid place that doesn't break the bank so to speak. The local food critic has them at around #10 on his best of list, which I tend to agree with.

There was a pretty cool magazine I found at the hotel last weekend called 'Where'
It's a bit touristy... but still had some good listings...
