As usual, posting a reminder here for anyone who bypasses the home page and comes straight to the Rant.
Have a good week, everyone.

Great writing. Carl, I really hope that Chicken continues to have you do this. I wish there was a paypal link or some way to contribute to the effort.

Serious question, Carl:
As a sportswriter, how do you like the format you are working with here at TD.com?
Does the ability to write a longer article liberate you, or do you think it makes you sloppy? (That was not meant to be a slight at you as I like your articles here, but I find my short articles end up being much tighter with word choice and impact than my longer articles - scientific articles, but still an apt comparison).
I only ask, because I imagine that most sportswriters are working within strict limits, and this must be a new format for you. Just curious how you like it.
Thanks again for your contribution!

Spirit of Dunson,
You ask a great question. I should start by saying I've always had the tendency to write long pieces (and I think they're undervalued at most newspapers, especially now). Also, the last newspaper where I worked had many more pages than most its size, so its writers could write longer than those at a lot of papers.
That said, yes, the Internet does provide opportunities to write longer. There's no question I could use an editor (as all writers do). I'm sure I could write these reports tighter, but Chicken and I are operating under some limitations that restrict me to about 10 stories a month. I used to write that many in less than a week.
To give you as much as I can with two baseball stories a week, I write longer pieces. I try to put as much from my interviews on the page, without simply transcribing the entire text and reprinting verbatim. The quotes I post are much longer than what you'd find in a newspaper, and maybe it's overkill, but again I want to get as much information into the two baseball pieces I write each week.
I think players and coaches like it too, because the full context of their comments is given ample consideration.
Did this answer your questions? But yes, I like the format. I'm given a lot of creative freedom, and I enjoy that.
(Note: I had to modify this post because I used the wrong word, "reporters" instead of "reports," and then I had the wrong subject-verb agreement in another sentence, so there's another argument for having an editor.)

That's what I thought. I know lots of sports writers have blogs and whatnot which allows them similar freedom, but I rarely read them.
quote:not overkill at all. Actually great to read. If ESPN spent more time showing interviews (especially candid ones like Jim Leyland), and less time saying booyah, they would be much better for it, IMO.
