How much do you discuss finances with your spouse?

Never seen this one on any board I've ever been on. Came to me today when I said to the wife, "If I died tomorrow do you know where our money is?" She said "No, and I don't want to talk about it."

We are in pretty much the same boat as you. I've got a file for bills, bank accounts, insurance policies etc in case something happens to me.

This thread reminds me, I need to update the file. Thanks...

a good bit. She could easily pay bills, etc. She already basically maintains the budget. The only thing that she would have to learn is the investing stuff, and I've already given her some rudimentary instruction on what to do in the event of my untimely death.

My fiancee and I are sitting down this summer to discuss this. As of now, she can really only balance a checkbook and pay bills. I'd say thats a good start, but she has no idea what a 401k or IRA is...

She takes care of the day-to-day finances as it is. The better question is, if she died, would I know how to pay the phone bill

In terms of IRA's and stuff, she'd be pretty clueless. But I'm hoping if I were to die she'd have bigger problems to deal with than making sure the retirement account was fully funded...

LSURussian, I really try to be a nice guy around here, but bitter little assholes like you make it difficult.

I resent that! I am a big a-hole, FYI... For little assholes, you'll have to go see kstout.

great question. We discuss it regularly, but she would be lost if I were to pass away. She could easily pay bills (she pays some, I pay some), but investing is not her forte and has absolutely no interest in the topic.

I also intimidate her, since she has no knowledge of financial markets, and I am loud, pushy, obnoxious and a know it all.

A lot. We both know how to access and understand where all of our money is.

I would by no means call myself an expert, but I do have a MBA in finance from a decent school. Although, I have always been much more interested economics than finance.

Great! Is that where you learned how to say, "Do you want fries with that?"?

Nope. Learned before that. There you go on my profession again. I am not sure why you have such an issue with it. I don't. I am proud of my job.

Maybe for the same reason you said yesterday that all persons in my profession should be shot. I have not gone that far with your profession.....yet.

actually I have repeatedly suggested that just officers of banks that take taxpayer aid (even loans) should be executed. And I would prefer just a hanging, as opposed to shot.

I think the handling of finances is something that couples should talk about before they get married. A long time ago there was a young wife who was good at it. But that was a long time ago and it was only one wife.

Both my wives were disasters with money. But with wife No. 2 we got things cleared away long before the wedding. I already told the story about her buying a new sports car with a credit card. That was the big red flag but she was totally willing to let me handle all the finances. She found the job "icky."
