Prayers with him and his family...I would let it play out a bit before speculation gets out of hand...

Prayers for you and your family D. Byrd. Whether or not this guy is legit, I will send it out, unlike some tools on this board. Sorry tool.

For those who didn't see my previous lone thread...this is my 2 cents:
As per ESPN: "Former LSU receiver Demetrius Byrd was in critical but stable condition Monday after a car accident in Miami, and his agent said the NFL prospect was expected to recover fully."
Critical but stable is not good in "hospital talk" when you are addressing long-term prognosis. All it means is that he probably won't crash and burn in the next day or so...stable does not necessarily mean doing well. When we say “stable” its often in reference to airway, breathing, and circulation.
Hourly CT scans? Unlikely...logistically he would have to sleep INSIDE the CT scanner to get hourly scans...you can’t keep transporting him to and from radiology (there is no current capabilities for bedside CT scans). Every 6 hours is the most I have ever seen...
AND, the patients who needed CT scan 4 times a day were not "doing well". Honestly, they were doing poorly.
Not trying to be negative...just giving a realistic point of view from someone who works in a hospital and is trying to read between the lines.
Hopefully, I’m dead wrong and we will see D Byrd thrive in the NFL.
I wish D Byrd all the best...will keep him and his family in my prayers.

quote:Since Demetrius is an adult, this doesn't make sense unless he is incapacitated in some way. He would have the autonomy to tell people about his condition, and his next of kin would take over that responsibility if he is unable to do so. If what you said is true, that does not bode well for his condition, and he may very well be in a coma.
They also said further details about the accident (and Byrd's condition) would be released as soon as Byrd's mother gave consent for the medical information to be released into the public record.
ETA: I pray that this is not the case.

ESPN is reporting that he was in "critical but stable condition"
i found it hard to believe that someone could have their car totaled.

I should've mentioned that I thought what I reported seeing on ESPN made this pretty implicit. I should have done a better job parsing between-the-lines since, yes, if Byrd is able to communicate, he would have control over whether details about his condition were to be released or not.
The report on ESPN said that hospital officials were only going to release more information on his condition based on his mother's consent. So...

Byrd in ICU after serious auto accidentComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services
MIAMI -- Former LSU receiver Demetrius Byrd was in critical but stable condition Monday after a car accident in Miami, and his agent said the NFL prospect was expected to recover fully.
Byrd
"I just spoke with Demetrius' mother and she said that he has mostly bumps and bruises," Byrd's junior college coach, Tim Hatten of Pearl River Community College, told ESPN's Joe Schad. "She said his injuries are not life threatening and should not be football threatening."
Agent David Dunn said in a statement that initial reports indicated Byrd will be OK. The statement did not give Byrd's injuries or any details about the crash Sunday.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Demetrius and with his mother, Sharon, and the entire Byrd family," Dunn said.
Last season, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound receiver had 37 catches for 513 yards and four TDs. He also played a key role in the Tigers' BCS national championship during the previous year.
LSU officials said that Byrd's car hit a utility pole after a tire blew out. No other cars were involved.
"This tragic accident puts in perspective just how fragile life can be," said LSU head coach Les Miles. "Demetrius is an outstanding young man with a bright future ahead of him. He was a joy to coach and he brought a great smile and a wonderful attitude to our football team. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family as we hope for a speedy recovery."
Byrd played at Miami Central High School before attending junior college.
The NFL draft begins Saturday. He's rated by Scouts Inc. as the No. 13 wide receiver in the draft.
Information from ESPN.com's Chris Low and The Associated Press was used in this report.

According to this story from the AP...

"Byrd had scrapes and bruises but was being held in intensive care for observation, said his junior college coach, Tim Hatten of Pearl River Community College in Mississippi. Hatten had talked with Byrd's mom, who said her son was alert and talking at the hospital."

I was in ICU for two days when I had a concussion, and I didn't suffer any internal bleeding or anything like that, although it was more serious than a typical in-game concussion that occurs in sports. There were earlier reports of Byrd breaking some bones in his face as well, so that could explain why he is in the ICU.
Obviously I don't know what is going on with Byrd, but the medical staff at hospitals will always be cautious.

ESPN reported Byrd had suffered a shoulder injury and that his agent said they were hopeing for a full recovery.

I'm thinking someone doesn't know what having a car "totaled" means.
That is not necessarily the case, I was in an accident where my car rolled over three and a half time, and i was in the back passenger, and was laying on glass and had to climb out of the car through the driver side door and jump to the ground. And all I had was rope burn across my life where the seat belt saved my life and prevented m from flying out of the car. My two cousins were in the front seat, and they had minor scratches from the glass, and since we were all wearing seat belts we all have our lives today.
But this is just proof that it is very possible that a car can get totaled and only have a few scrapes. But i doubt that is the class w/ D Bird since he is still in the hospital. But it is possible for a car to get totaled and not get injured, I am living proof of this.

I know for a fact that the updates are correct. He is in ICU for a reason but his vitals are stable. Please stop this craziness and just pray for him. Details will come when there is a definite change. I hope he makes a full recovery and is able to play in the NFL but most of all I pray that he recovers and is able to lead a high quality life. God works all things out for good--He has a plan!!! Just continue to pray. This board was frequently a source of annoyance for Byrd--he took it to heart! He is a young man who has made mistakes as ALL of us have. So for once just SHUT UP and pray for him!
