SCARIEST horror movie?

I gotta go with Poltergeist, and the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Both of those movies were traumatic experiences. I'm sure a lot of people will say The Exorcist, but it didn't really faze me at all. To this day, I still can't watch Poltergeist -- it still gives me the boo-boo-jeebies.

The only movie that ever scared me was The Blob. Its funny now but it scared the shite outta me back in the day.

Same here. I didn't find it scary at all.
I've been thinking a lot this afternoon, and I think part of my problem (related to my thread started earlier today on older horror) is that I don't believe in the supernatural, so scary movies based on supernatural events just seem stupid to me, and that includes "Poltergeist."
A crazy chainsaw wielding retard in a cannibalistic family in rural Texas can at least actually happen in real life, and that makes it scary.
But I guess that causes a conflict in my reasoning, because I really love "Dawn of the Dead" and that is based on something supernatural happening.
I'll have to think about this more.
But anyway, I agree, the original "TCM" is the scariest movie ever, IMHO.
ETA: I certainly think "Poltergeist" is a fine film. It's very entertaining and I don't get bored watching it at all, it's just that I don't find it scary.

The original TCM -- the "meathook" scene, when Leatherface slammed the door shut and hung the chick up by the back of the neck, and then later when they were holding the chick and letting Grandpa try to hit her with the hammer, and big chunks of her head were falling out -- that shite was just plain spooky.

Exorcist hands down. FWIW the preist that they modeled Father Merrin off of was still teaching at SLU up until a few years ago.

The whole time where they have the chick tied to the chair and the grandpa scene is just absolutely grueling. It's so scary that it's exhausting. Actually, it even starts before they captured her....it starts when Leatherface is chasing her through the woods....she's alone, all her friends are dead, and she's got a chainsaw wielding retard chasing her. fricking classic! And then she thinks she finds refuge in the gas station...but oh no. I mean, that's just good horror. And can you imagine being tied to a chair in that house with those people? frick, I'd pass out and just let them kill me.

Uh, no dude. That entire story was made up. While the character in TCM is 'based' on Ed Gein, but the two are extremely different. The main difference is, if my memory of the Biography Channel is correct, Ed Gein actually only killed one person, possibly two. What made him so notorious is that he actually dug up bodies from the local Graveyard, skinned the corpses and wore the flesh. Bill from Silence of the Lambs was also based on Ed Gein, for the same reason: the wearing of the human skin.

What Gein did to his mom is also a large reason for his... notoriety. Cleaned her like a deer.

When I was about 11 I watched Night of The Living Dead - I think it was the 70's version, it was in color. :shrug: I had to sleep in my sisters' room that night and that night I kept seeing a tall white dead guy with an axe stuck in his head coming out of the closet.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre got to me pretty bad the first time I watched it. I was 15 at the time and me and some friends watched it on a busted up VHS tape. The last 15 minutes of that movie are almost painful to watch. I'm pretty much a horror movie fanatic but that one is the only one that's ever gotten to me.

Fire in the Sky = terrifying
It's the true story of alien abduction. I couldn't sleep for week after seeing it (I was 12). The things those aliens did to that man is horrifying and how they adapted it to screen made it even scarier.

Saw Nightmare on Elm Street when I was really young. The whole bed scene messed with my head for a while. The movie is still pretty creepy to me but knowing that the guy who gets killed in the bed is Jack Sparrow took away alot of the fright factor. 
I'd say this and the Exorcist are the only two movies that remain legitimately creepy. The Ring though was the best horror movie to come out in quite some time. I also enjoyed the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Biel.

Maybe it was to her man. I wouldn't value her opinion on movies or anything, but nothing wrong if she dug it. You should ask her to watch something like Captivity, comfort her during the "scary" scenes, and then put in on her thigh right at the climax...no pun intended.
