With Calipari bolting to UK, it should be interesting to see how this affects John Wall's college decision.
I always thought that he was a Memphis lean with a possibility of going to Baylor, but Duke has made up a lot of ground. They officially offered him on Sunday, and he has had some very positive things to say.
And now, one of the insiders at the Duke paysites (basically Duke's version of Sonny) writes this "I had my second conversation with Wall in three days last evening and I can tell you that Duke is a player. We discussed Kentucky, Calipari's move, and a lot more. I have also been talking with various sources about the situation and Duke has made up a lot of ground. But rest assured, that Duke while not the leader, is very much in this race for his services and that his contacts with Coach K have been fruitful. This will not be over until the Jordan Brand All Star game if all goes as planned. He will make a choice on national TV, be it there or with ESPNU. One more thing, as of the McDonald's Dunk contest last evening, Wall had not talked with Calipari."
His article also said that Wall was completely surprised by Coach K's down-to-earth personality. Wall always thought Coach K was a suit-and-tie, "serious" all-the-time kinda coach.
This should make things a little more interesting. I still doubt that Wall will end up at Duke, but the chances have increased quite a bit the past few days.
And in case anyone cares, the quotes are just from the writer's public comments. I didn't quote any paysite info.

Wall would put UK over the top. For a year.

He's shown less and less interest in Baylor over the past year. I figured he would have been a Baylor lock with his connections, but I guess he doesn't want to go to Waco for one year.
Katz said Wall was down to Memphis and Duke, but that was before Calipari left.

One player? Meeks and Patterson are gone.

Wall, Henry, Cousins....

There's no way that Calipari will bring 7 or 8 guys to UK. The Henry brothers, Cousins, Wall, Sallie, Witherspoon, the Juco guys, etc. cannot all end up in Lexington.

I thought C.J. was with the Yankees? And I see witherspoon going back to georgia. Whether its uga, gt, or state.

on top of keeping patterson and meeks, and miller and galloway off the bench
the whole hypothetical would be if they added wall, cousins, and henry
plus they have orton coming in, number three overall center, and pilgrim, raw freak talent coming from one of the black schools
they would be in the final four next year

Brian Clifton is truly a godsend for people who like to speculate about recruiting rumors. The guy will literally say anything to the press, and he has instant credibility since he is the guy in charge of Wall's recruitment.
Just a couple of weeks ago, when Roy Williams called Wall, he told the Raleigh News & Observer "I have no desire to talk to, to be involved with, to visit, to contemplate in any shape, form or fashion John Wall going to play for Roy Williams. Zero. I don’t have any respect for Roy Williams. I encourage [my players] to play for guys that will inspire them to be good people. If you’re not a good person, you can’t make someone a good person."
In the same interview, he said "The emergence of Duke as a viable option, that in and of itself has caused a change.”
"We all left the meeting with the conclusion that it was worth exploring further,” said Clifton. “I respect Coach K and the way that he goes about business. … He was enough of a professional to deal with people based on who they really are, not on what he’s heard they might be. I’d be comfortable with any of my guys learning from and being shaped and molded by a guy who’s got that in his character."

Anyways, he said something a little more restrained this week, but it sheds more insight on Wall's decision-making process than just about anything else since the Final 4 weekend.
He told SI "John absolutely wants to be a pro," Clifton said, "and if you want to be a one-and-done, there are situations that are more conducive to that. Maybe you have two really good schools, two really strong traditions, two great coaches, but one of them is going to allow you to more easily continue on your path, if that's what you want to do. ... But if you're going to be on campus for two, three or four years, then maybe that situation isn't as attractive as the other one. When John comes to grips with what's most important for him, then he'll be able to make his decision."
It's pretty obvious that he is talking about Calipari and K. I am surprised that Baylor is completely off the map, but he didn't even mention them in the Nike Hoop Summit. While Wall will continue to mention 8 or 9 schools, it looks like it's really just down to Duke and Kentucky.

as much as i would love for wall to go to duke i think it is very unlikely he will. he doesnt even have an offer from them because he hasnt been able to make the grades. IF he can get his grades together and gets an offer from duke then i say he signs with them.

Wall didn't have an offer with Duke for a long time, but the weekend after the Villanova loss, K met with Wall, Clifton, and Wall's mother. At the end of the meeting, K finally gave Wall a committable offer, so if he wants to go to Duke, he has the opportunity.
As far as I know he is academically qualified. He's not an academic superstar by any means (unlike Ryan Kelly who has a 4.2 and a 2140 SAT), but it's good enough for him to get into Duke, and the admissions people are willing to lower the standards for top recruits like Avery, Dockery, and Wall.
Eric Bledsoe is another uncommitted point guard prospect, and he hasn't yet qualified academically. He seems to be the one who really wants to go to Duke, but until he gets a certain score, he won't get the offer.
And because of a few twists in Wall's story (Calipari left Memphis and now both schools are weaker, Sherron Collins is staying for his final year at Kansas, Sidney Lowe is running the program at NC State into the ground, Brian Clifton hates Roy Williams, John's mother is sick and Waco is over a thousand miles away, etc), he may actually end up at Duke. I would guess a 30% chance though; they are certainly not the leader.
I think Xavier Henry will end up at Kansas. The only hold-up is whether his brother will be given the chance to transfer without losing eligibility.

wow, i am very happy i was wrong. i checked his scout profile and duke was listed as giving him an offer. i dont think wall will go to kentucky and it will probably come down to baylor and duke. what worries me about baylor is that assistant coach that was wall's aau coach. i hope that distant is a big factor and he ends up at duke. as for bledsoe, i have seen him play several times this year and i would love for him to go to duke as well. he always talks about how he would love to go to duke but he definately has to get his grades together.

he is going straight to the NBA
quote:
Typically, a player is not eligible for the draft until at least one NBA season has elapsed since his high school graduation, which is more commonly known as the "one-and-done" rule, which is why players spend at least a year in college. But a player can enter the draft if he is at least 19 years old (Wall is), has not graduated from high school and at least one NBA season has elapsed since the graduation of the class with which the player would have graduated had he graduated from high school. Wall is scheduled to graduate from Word of God this spring but is in his fifth year of high school. He spent two years at Garner High School and started his junior year at Broughton before transferring to Word of God, which reclassified him as a sophomore. If he had stayed at Broughton or at Garner, he would have graduated in 2008.
