would you prefer shep to be the motion man or the QB?

for RIGHT NOW, trindon looks like the perfect slot guy for the motion pitch, as his speed on the sweep will always be respected. but this question is more of a long-term question

i really hope the LSU coaches finally install/use this play. with JJ split out wide we have a 6-4 kid who can run and jump, so he will be an actual receivign threat (as opposed to a chad pennington)

the advantage of shep at the QB position is that he is an actual threat to pass, but this is, and will always be, a running play for the vast majority of snaps. also teams have shown that non-throwers can have success when you surprise the D with a throw

the disadvantage i see to him being the QB is that once trindon leaves, we don't really have that super explosive speed guy that will make Ds worry about the sweep off the motion. shep is a great option for this with his speed.

I really dont think it matters where JJ or Shep are, as long as they are on the field

I would prefer Shep to run it. I want JJ to be the starter at QB. Just my preference.

isn't John Williams supposed to be a lil burner? is he ever gonna play? and I think Drayton Calhoun could also play this role. or hell, Murphy. so Shep at QB.

I can't recall Holiday ever being used on a pitch. He presents a small pitch target for the QB, so if he gets the ball on a sweep, I would expect a hand-off.

Calhoun would fit nicely for Trindon.

I would guess we'll see him at both this year. I think he probably has a little advantage over Trindon given his ability to cut on a dime if he sees an opening. As far as the future goes, Claiborne and Calhoun could potentially be sweep guys. I think JJ at QB with RS at back on the zone read could be lethal.

If RS isn't the sweep guy, he has to be the QB. In fact, I think he HAS to be the QB. There is no comparing his ability as a runner to JJ.

ETA: Murphy wouldn't be a bad sweep guy either.

Here is how I see it. Next Year LSU has some options if they use this scheme.

QB: KW, Shep, or even JJ (I think JJ is definitely athletic enough to pose a serious threat as a runner). I actually think KW would be best in this role b/c a lot of times the QB needs to break one DL/LB arm tackle in order to get in the open field. I think KW provides a little more strength but still having big time speed.

Slot (Felix Jones role): TH (ideal but only 1 yr left), Shep (also ideal), Williams (??), Calhoun(??). I also think a KW type could fill this role (See Ricky Williams in Miami). I think vision is slightly more important than explosive speed.

FB: Scott, KW, Ridley (when healthy), Bush. Obviously this is more of a power position that requires a strong burst through the line. Ridley's burst was phenomenal last yr, so I hope he is able to get back to that after the injury.

Actually, I think the best philosophy since we have so many options is to use different personnel groups in this formation. Let some of the guys play multiple roles. Sometimes line Shep at QB sometimes at slot. Line KW at QB and at the FB position. It will definitely keep the defense off balance.

I really wish we would use this formation for 5-10 plays a game. Hell IT HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE AT EVERY LEVEL IF YOU HAVE THE CORRECT PEOPLE TO RUN IT.

i've all but given up on murphy until he shows me something in a real game

he's had like 2 or 3 good runs showing his athleticism in his 3 years of play

that would be pretty crazy

i mean JJ could still play QB in this formation also, especially if he improves in his running and can manage running through tight spaces at the LOS

i just hope we finally run this shite

2 plays I hope we never see again...

1. The Wild Murphy
2. JLee running the option

I don't think it is his fault. When he comes in, he gets the ball. Not hard to defend.

IF we had a center who could consistently snap to a spot, you could set up without a player directly in back of the center. You could have both JJ and RS in the backfield with one of them going in motion just before the snap to the spot where the snap is going. One side effect would be forcing the other team to burn timeouts.

You could also set it up similar to a Notre Dame Box type of offense giving you a severe overload on one side or the other with many bootleg, screen or sweep options.

What can I say, I have a vivid imagination.
