50 + 12 Greatest NBA Players of All Time

50 Greatest of All Time (as of 1996)
When the NBA turned 50, the suits compiled the list linked above. Ten years later, Ernie, Chuck, and Jet started talking about who would be the ten greatest that weren't on the list.
Well, now it's 12 years later. Who are the 12 greatest who aren't on that list?
There's simply no way not to include the following:
Kobe Bryant
Tim Duncan
LeBron James
Reggie Miller
Kevin Garnett
Dominique Wilkins
Allen Iverson
Then for me, the next six are arguable:
Bernard King?
Steve Nash? (two-time MVP; the only one of the first 50 MVP's not to be included in the original list was Bil Walton)
Jason Kidd?
Dirk Nowitski?
Vince Carter?
Tracy McGrady?
Dwayne Wade?
Inevitable, but not there yet:
Chris Paul
Dwight Howard

Jordan was on the original list. If D Wilkins wasn't on the original 50, I don't see him being in the next group.

Paul Pierce should be in there somewhere.

I think Kidd should be in with the first group

Yes on all but LeBron. He hasn't been around long enough yet.

Plays no defense, never won anything team wise of significance. His success is due to the players and system.

Are you arguing that he hasn't done enough yet or that there should be a minimum number of years of service required?

LeBron has been a fantastic player, but he doesn't have anything really to his name, aside from just being fricking awesome. He has no major awards (aside from Rookie) and no titles.
He isn't even in the top 100 for any major statistical category yet is he?

I don't keep up with statistical records and all that in the NBA, but regardless, I don't think you could argue against him being a top 50 player based on skill.

That he hasn't done enough yet.

Well yeah, but skill doesn't really account for too much at this juncture of his career.
- He has no titles.
- He has no MVPs.
- He isn't in the top 100 for points, boards, assists, steals, blocks, etc.
If he plays for 20 years, he'll be a top 10 player all time no doubt.

As far as # of MVPs or championship rings, I would tend to agree.
But like I said earlier, I would take him skill for skill in the top 50.

AI has 24,000 points, 5,500 assists, and 2,000 steals, not to mention an MVP, multiple scoring titles, and I'm sure multiple All-NBA defense.
He's a lock IMO based on the fact that not too many other guys are worthier.

Shaq made the original list after less time in the league then LBJ right now. I say no on Reggie Miller and Dominique. I would add
Duncan
LBJ
Kobe
KG
Iverson
Wade (if LBJ and Shaq get in after the short time frames so does he)
Jason Kidd
Gary Payton
Steve Nash (Back to back MVPs and really was in the running for another)
Let me think of 3 more

and I thought at the time he didn't belong on that list because he hadn't been around long enough.

Agree. Some may not like him for personal reasons, but absolutely crazy to think there are more than 50-60 players with a better career than AI.
