Matty Ott?

Does ANYONE know why we took him out when he was shutting them down? I just cannot wrap my mind around this one. The kid stuck out the side in the previous inning and was just getting warmed up. Then we put Paul in and he got hammered. Then we took him out and put in a freshman with the bases loaded?? I just dont understand what was so wrong with Ott going one more inning and bringing Coleman in then??

I was thinking the same thing.... but hey what do I know

the only thing i can think of is that they didn't want to have ott work too many innings and not be able to go mid week... also the way bert. threw saturday, they probably assumed he would come in and shut them down. doesn't seem like they had a real reason just wanted to get bert more work and have ott available for mid week games if needed.

I didn't get a chance to listen to the game so i don't know how long he pitched. Maybe he was on a pitch count? Had some stiffness? could be anything. relax guys its one weekend. The Tigers are gonna be fine.

Matty maybe pitched 20 pitches
he sat every batter down himself in his second inning with very few fouls hit too. He was the most dominant pitcher I have seen this weekend besides Raunaldo. I just dont get it. Paul has been inconsistent this year. Sure he did good the other night but not better than Ott did today or the rest of the season. Good news is that we have one hell of a pitcher in this kid. Just dont think in that situation in the game you start gambling. PLUS when Paul was in there coach just stayed in the dugout! Not even a walk to the mound to slow things down. I do think he was outcoached this weekend. Everytime we got on a role thier coach was killing out momentum by taking a long walk. PM looked alot like Smoke out there today. Sad to say.

i think the coaches trip about pitch counts too much

Come on, now. We go through this every year. The coaching decisions made in March are not the same ones that are going to be made at the CWS. It's all about experimentation right now, especially with pitching.
Personally, I've got high hopes for Ott and Matulis, but at this stage of the season, nobody knows who's going to be the best players come May and June, not even the players themselves.

I don't think it has to do with his pitch count because he only threw 29 total and like 21strikes but more with having him ready sooner and getting bert some work....but agree that gambling or changing things up at that time of the game with ott shutting them down was the wrong move

Because baseball games early in the season are often used to determine who can do what in pressure situations. When you beat the snot out of people every game there is not much chance to see who is going to perform when things look bad.
Matty Ott did well so he will probably be used more in the future. Betuccini struggled and hopefully it was a learning experience and he will perform better next time.
It sucks bad to lose but at this point in the season it's better to lose while gaining valuable experience and insight than to win but know nothing more about your players.

We won alot of games last year when most people would say what the hell is PM doing. Then it works out in his favor so I just shut my mouth.

I'm just glad to see a pitcher step up

Mainieri said after the game he really wanted the guys to learn what it's like to lose a game. He thought they were becoming complacent with winning so much.
That's great coaching, IMO!

I think coach wanted to see how Bert performed pitching on back-to-back days b/c we will need him in that situation later on in the year.

its early in the season and he's trying to get different pitchers work

Back when Skip would do the same thing early in the spring in non-conference games, the usual know-it-alls would invariably spout the same jibberish and acted like they knew way more than our NC coach! And who says things change! Not the Negatigers in Louisiana!
