Why isn’t anyone talking about this?

The railroads, the backbone of American industrials, just reported that volume excluding coal, had the highest volume March since 2008!

Chemicals +5.5% YoY - highest ever
Grains - highest volume since 1993!

There is so much noise in the economy, but the signal says that American industry is doing fantastic.

Another economic benefit brought to you by President Trump’s tariffs.

It has changed a lot over the years. They had pools for jobs that were dedicated to coal only till about 2010. After that a lot more intermodal and chemicals were running through the line. Last I heard the plant in Redfield is good till 2032. Railroads truly are the backbone they carry things trucks cannot.

I'd love to hear how you think this has to do with tariffs.

My guess was that truck drivers have to speak English now leading to a change in the way some goods are shipped. But that's just a guess.

The United States is experiencing a domestic manufacturing boom thanks to President Trump’s tariffs. Transportation is downstream from manufacturing.

SDV thinks the Fed needs to cut 100 basis points because the economy is in shambles though.

Damn.

You've already proven yourself to be economically ignorant in another thread. You claim everything is a sign of Trump. I didn't ask for your conclusion, I asked for evidence to support the claim that tariffs result in higher train usage.

Trucking numbers for example are down, not up.

Cass Transportation Index Report February 2026

The expenditures component of the Cass Freight Index, which measures the total amount spent on freight, rose 5.1% m/m in February. Expenditures were up 2.1% from the year-ago level in February, after a 0.6% y/y gain in January.

While shipment declines continue, the year over year increase in expenditures was driven by higher rates.

Costs are up and the number of shipments are down. And as long as the price of gas keeps going up, I don't see the trend reversing in the near future.
