Or, are we grasping at straws here?

At this stage — absolutely. Without question.
This is a mid major roster stapled together by a new coach following the firing of a 15 year tenured coach, which brought about a mass exodus of every player who played a single minute last season for a team that barely made the conference tournament
There isn’t a guy on this roster that played a minute of high major hoops before December

Penn State went 3-17 in Big10 play....one of those wins was over Iowa toward the end of the year.
So, yeah...not much was expected. They're lucky to be in the Tourney.
When Villanova was considered a Cinderella in '85, they went 9-7 in the Big East (best Conference in basketball then) and had a better overall record than this Iowa team.
Iowa (10-10) in Big10 play. Cinderella isn't simply if you're a small school or mid-major.

Yes. We got spoiled with upsets the last decade or so because of one and done. Prior to that Iowa would have been a Cinderella story.
That incredible Villanova run in 1985? They were an 8-seed.
Danny and the Miracles in 1988? 6-seed.
If they win 2 more games, it will eclipse that stuff.

There were some at LSU that would call this Year 0 because you can't count year one when you have to build a new roster.
So they said.

Ben McCollum has a career head coaching record of 450–107. 80% win percentage. Guy's an absolute machine.
