I’m wanting to possibly switch from lead to lithium batteries for my troll motor (which is a Minn Kota Foretrex 80#). My onboard charger can charge lithiums.

My question is can it still charge my lead cranking battery? How would it charge my lead when I select lithium on charger? How does all this work or do I need 2 different chargers? Thanks

How many batteries total do you have and how many banks are in the charger?

Is it a Noco genius charger?

that will probably depend on the exact charger you have. I have a 3 bank changer that does charge both of my lithium batteries as well as my lead acid cranking battery. So it is possible to have one charger maintain both types.

My charger is able to recognize the type of battery and configure itself based on the type of battery.

I’m not sure about that. Probably need a separate charger but sure someone more qualified will chime in.

Is it an older 2 stroke motor with no alternator?

For my rig I don’t even have my on board charger connected to my cranking battery. The alternator from my outboard keeps its up with no problem. If there were an extended time maybe several months without using the boat I just connect an external charger to my cranking battery before the trip.

Sorry, this doesn’t answer your question just explaining my setup.

Got a couple Promariner chargers and the single selector for type of battery controls all outputs. Might be looking at a dedicated charger for the lithiums.

When you plug in a minn kota charger it allows you to choose which type of battery charging profile on which bank/lead.

I have mine set to charge my cranking/electronics AGM on lead #1 and 2,3 and 4 set to charge my LiTime lithium trolling motor batteries

Its a 3 bank promarina charger, I’ll read up on this specific model once I figure that out.
