Interesting comments by Titleist Tour Truck guys say that Cam Young moved from a 9 degree driver to a 11 degree driver because he wanted more spin to help his shot making.

It certainly didn't hurts his distance at all. his 375 yard drive on #18 was evident of that.

In talking to some fitters the spin worry and low spin trend may be changing slowly.

I have been saying for years that the new golf balls in general are way too low spin for most amateur's.

It is very apparent with a lot of amateur's struggling with hitting fairway woods on the deck and trying to get the proper height and carry.

This is a major reason why I went to a 4 wood and a 7 wood setup in fairway woods. The same could be said on the Tour as well now with some many players carrying 7 and 9 woods.

Is there an optimal spin rate for each of us, I guess there is. It may be hard to accept that spin can be your friend with the advent of launch monitors.

Like Harvey Pennick said, 250 yards in the fairway is better than 300 in the woods.

Thoughts ?

In the physics, the spin has to be there at a certain level to lift the ball doesn’t it?

I just saw an article that advised considering raising the tee height for par 3 shots to get a better descent angle bc many of us don’t get enough height to hold some greens.

I guess each player is different.

I’m a low ball hitter, not by choice, but because of my swing DNA. So I use the Pro V1-X to get more height on the ball.

I think some amateur golfers may gravitate toward a low spin ball because that’s what most pros use.

A lot of truth in that statement.

I am a high ball hitter especially with my irons. I am using the 2026 Chrome Tour right now, it seems to be the best of both worlds for my right now.

Titleist also makes a double left dot ball for him because he spins it so much

I think spin depends on your game tbh

For example, I used to be high spin with driver with a negative angle of attack. After changing my attack angle, I became very low spin off the tee and added a lot of yardage. The downside of this is I am not able to work the ball as much off the tee.

Bryson is a guy that is very high spin. And it works for him. If he was lower spin off the tee, he would probably hit it too far. Scottie is also a guy that could hit the ball 40 yards further if he wanted to, but he opts for more spin, less launch, and control off the tee.

There also has been a relatively recent movement by pros to take spin off of 125 yards and in shots. Instead of playing the ball behind the hole and spinning it back. Many are hitting 50-75% shots and playing more of the 1 hop and stop action into greens.

Manipulation of spin can be your friend if you know your tendencies and how to use it in certain situations. However, 99.9% of golfers probably aren't good or consistent enough to worry about spin more than what driver their fitter gets them into for Max distance.

I think this is just a different style shot. Lower trajectory wedge shots. They still need a lot of spin to get that check. Outside of not wanting a super spinny drive, the only time I think of spin is when my pitches and chips have absolutely no check up. I'm a 14 handicap and haven't been dumping a bunch of money on balls just yet, but did pick some up with the recent buy 3 get one free sales. And that's the biggest improvement I'm looking for. Maybe a few more yards on my drive, but mostly stopping the ball from around the green.

When you have 185 MPH ball speed, you can and should make any adjustment necessary to prioritize accuracy.
