Good morning fellow h&gb baws.

Wanted to see if yall had any recs for a non-automatic watering system. I currently use a 5gal bucket with the tips they peck and get water. Problem is I’m starting to have leaks and run out of water quickly. I don’t have water run to my coop/run yet so it’s a manual filling system by me. Have any better systems I should look at? Will probably switch to two buckets because I’m up to 15 birds and as it heats up, they will go through a lot of water, even without leaks.

Secondly, there seem to be a lot of mosquitoes in my coop when I open it in the morning. Any recs to control that? Either repellant or eradication. I air it out during the day but it’s currently closed up tight at night. Removing some panels today since the cold is over to help with air flow.

Thanks!

Not sure where you’re located, but we use Mosquito Joe. We have ducks & pigeons & is safe for them. We have a pond and the mosquitos were unbearable.

I have cut an old water heater tank in half and it works well….i spray it out a couple of times a week to get rid of mosquito larvae.

I also spray everything down with Bifenthrin periodically to keep mosquitoes, lice, and other insects at bay. Gotta keep the ladies comfortable!

I use blowers from old hvac units. Powerful things.
For water, I use a trough on the outside of the pen with a float.

I put a piece of a mosquito dunk in the water. It kills the larvae before they can turn into mosquitos. Safe for animals etc. I've been using them for years and my chickens are fine.

I've got a rain barrel sitting on the outside of my coop and ran 1/2" pvc inside the run. From there I put a handful of T's with the threaded middle piece which perfectly fits the nipples you are already using. I haven't ran a gutter to get it to refill itself but I've had it for just under a year and filled it up 3 times so far. I used to use the same bucket system as you but was constantly having leaks around where the nipples fit into the bucket. This has been way better.

For mosquitos, I'll empty everything out, spray down the inside with talstar-p, wait for it to dry, then put nesting material back in. I do it 4x a year and never have trouble with mosquitos.

I am suprised the chickens don’t eat the dunk….they are typically not too choosy about what they eat!

They eat anything and everything...hahahhaha

I have a gravity fed water container. It floats at the top where they can't get to it. Before adding the dunks they were always around and somehow in the container.
