Assault on Historic City Park Golf Course

“
Writing in his new e-mail news site RedEye, publisher J. R. Ball says:
“A park with unusual potential: City-Brooks Community Park may be the most consequential decision in the current wave.
• At roughly 150 acres, it's one of Baton Rouge's largest public spaces. Its rolling hills—believed to be remnants of ancient Mississippi River dunes—are unusual terrain for south Louisiana.
• That topography creates rare possibilities: scenic trails, natural overlooks, amphitheater-style spaces and varied recreation zones. BREC's master plan process—led by Sasaki—will force a long-deferred answer on the golf course and set a long-term direction for one of the city's largest public spaces.
• The decades-long debate over the historic 9-hole course has never been simple. Golfers want it preserved. Park advocates want the acreage repurposed for broader public use.
o Sasaki designer Josh Brooks is signaling the decision doesn't have to be "binary"—suggesting some version of the golf course survives in the redesign.
o Don’t expect such framing to please either side. Golf purists may bristle at a reconfigured or shortened course. Park advocates may see a compromise as a missed opportunity to fully reimagine what the space could become.
The park is underperforming its potential. The master plan is the best chance in decades to change that.”
“If more than 28,000 rounds a year is ‘underperforming,’ then words have lost their meaning.”
City Brooks is not an idle green space waiting to be reinvented. It is a 100 year old, walkable, tree canopied course with real shot values, a design shaped by rare Baton Rouge topography, and a steady stream of actual users. You cannot replace that with a diagram. And once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
What is underperforming is the planning exercise itself.
Sasaki’s plans shrink the course on paper, misstate basic facts, and label an active, heavily used historic facility as “passive.” The entire framework treats beloved public land like a redevelopment site rather than a living landscape with a century of civic memory and continuous use. The bias against the course is unmistakable.
A master plan built on errors and assumptions cannot produce a credible vision for the future of City Brooks. Baton Rouge deserves a process grounded in facts, transparency, and respect for the landscape we already have — not one that begins by erasing it.

I hope they either leave it alone or repurpose it in full. I'm not interested in having whatever half of a 9 hole golf course would look like. Do it all the way or don't.

Here's the part the proponents of the "Central Park" boondoggle aren't saying.
Replacing the golf course with their Candyland "vision" is estimated to cost between 13.3 to 30.5 MILLION in up front construction costs with an annual deficit requiring 1.2 to 2.1 MILLION TAX PAYER MONEY for the annual upkeep of this boondoggle a/k/a property developers home run!

This is a terrible plan and in reality sounds like a perpetual money grab by elected and appointed officials.
The grift is never ending in LA. Of course it will need millions to develop and millions annually for upkeep.
When in reality, it will become too dangerous for the public to utilize due to vagrants and other factors.
That is a really interesting course for Baton Rouge. And accessible to students.

Jenni Peters and Varsity Sports should lose business for this lady trying to get this done. Don’t give this lady business

There is a segment of our culture that totally whiffs it when it comes to City Park Golf Course. Call it Group Think or whatever, but here is the common sense when it comes to this property.
The golf course is open from sunrise to sunset every day, except for two holidays. It gets the most traffic of anything in the park. It generates revenues that cover its cost. It has the most diverse participants. It adds to the environment. And now we have a bunch of "elites" who think they know better and we would be better off heeding their suggestions. Worse, they are gas lighting us into thinking the course doesn't produce.
What is being totally overlooked by those who advocate against the existing golf course... and that is basic wisdom. We know what we are getting with the current product... if we follow their recommendations we will fall into the trap of unintended and unproven consequences.
They don't do their homework, they come up with hairbrained ideas and insist that we are the ones that aren't seeing straight. One of the most basic indicators of a product's success is its budget... look at the numbers. If they keep going up, then something right is being done. Trying to shade those numbers is dishonesty.
Who are the ones being the most honest... the ones that know the truth. City Park Golf Course is a treasure, and as far as the park goes, it should be enhanced and preserved. Let the real numbers do the talking.

The way they just keep after this is so bizarre to me. It’s not like what they want to replace this 100 year old golf course and green space is a good idea. This amphitheater idea will certainly get minimal use if any. They tried the boat rental years ago. Minimal interest.
A handful of people are dead set in getting rid of it. I get why the shoe store lady wants the space…a nice cross country track for her business less than a 1/4 mile away. Why do these other people want it dead?
This will have a massive effect on public golf in Baton Rouge. I’ll certainly never support the shoe store lady again (I feel dumb for having her shirts) what else can a person do. It’s odd having to fight for a golf course that is busy and well loved.

Golf is perceived as a country club MAGA type sport. The other people are generally leftists who loathe the game of the wealthy. Killing a course is akin to getting a street name changed from Jackson or Jefferson to MLK.

Thank you for identifying the true source of the problem-- Jenni Peters, fronting for Rolfe McCollister. Even though she says repeatedly she just wants a running track, she wants that track to encompass the entire 40 acres of the historic City Park Golf Course.

It is more than that. It is a real estate play by BRAF and LSU Foundation to wrap City Park up in a conservancy and push all of the maintenance of the Lakes Project onto BREC's plate. They don't have the staff or expertise to do it. Also, Sasaki has invited real-estate developers into the planning process, something they were never authorized to do by the BREC Commission.

I was just thinking about this today. What’s the latest on this - when do they decide what is going to happen?

In the original $80 million spent on the lakes project, the original plan called for the construction of running walking paths around the lake; however, now that Sasaki BRAF and LSU squandered the $80 million, the assault on Historic City Park Golf Course has begun opining they need that land for the walkways and running paths that were negligently never built.

There's a public meeting tomorrow at 2pm at BREC's offices located at 6201 Florida Boulevard. THE PUBLIC CAN ATTEND BUT NOT SAY ANYTHING! SO MUCH FOR TRANSPARENCY AND SEEKING PUBLIC OPINION by BREC and SASAKI and of course, the property developers.

I thought this was a thread about someone getting robbed in New Orleans at the City Park course. That would check out.

They just put a walking path at our little muni here. Thought it would be a bad idea but its really worked out fine. Course we don't have 6-digit population here either.
Posted on 3/13/26 at 8:29 am to VernonPLSUfan
There’s already a walking/running path damn near around the whole property.

If they shut City Park down Webb will be completely fricked.

Sometime in April or May. The BREC Commission has to vote to approve it. Contact them and tell them you don't want City Park--Baton Rouge's oldest park--turned into an amusement park. There are already plenty of facilities and activities there.
