Is there a way to register an old trailer that is not identified with a VIN in LA?

Have acquired an old trailer…. No papers no VIN. Is there a way to get it marked so a title can be created?

Go to the State Troopers office. They will give you a vin # and loan you a punch set to stamp it in. They used to, at least.

do you have another trailer that you can get a permanent plate for? If you do, you’ll just need a screwdriver

I cant really help, but i will say the trailer for my skiff has never been registered. Bought it in Mississippi , and it was originally from another state that doesn't require registration. I tried for a while to track down all the paperwork needed to register it but was unsuccessful. I have been stopped once in 10 years, told the officer I lost the plate, and i dont think he ticketed me.

I know its illegal, but ill take the risk since there is minimal risk involved. I dont plan on selling either.

No.

If it were a home made trailer, there is a process to aquire a VIN and register that.

Spoke to my contact at a title company. He told me to bring it to the State Troopers Office. If it was manufactured, they will probably be able to find a vin (I didn't ask how) if not they will create and add a VIN to it.

Once done you can then get it registered and plated

You sound like my step grandpaw. He had several trailers and 1 license plate he would switch around.

I bought a boat recently that didn’t have any paperwork on the trailer. I don’t even remember the guys reasoning, and I didn’t really care because it was a good deal and I really wanted that boat. The only issue I ran into was getting financing. Had to tell them there was no trailer, and I was using my other boats trailer to transport it to the launch and then the boat would be parked in a boat slip at “my moms camp”.
I have an enclosed trailer/camper with a permanent trailer plate, that I only use during hunting season. I only use my boat when it’s not hunting season… draw your own conclusions with that information
