Is it possible matt is the most straight edge man ever at LSU? No golf, drinking in office, sleeping with students, FBI probes, etc. because it is either Matt McMahon is the nicest man ever or verge told the big donors “don’t worry about funding MBB. We want your money to go to Fball and in 3 years once it’s stabilized we can invest in MBB”. Because I have no idea how we are having a conversation about dude being my MBB coach. I think verge is tanking MBB because he wants every penny to go to Fball.

He sure as shite doesn’t burn the midnight oil on basketball so what is he? Likely a company man using this job to get a front office job the same way his coach and mentor did.

Doesn’t he have a bunch of kids? Have heard he’s a big family guy, and generally a really good person.

He hasn’t worked out here, but I’m not one of the people trashing him personally. He just doesn’t have the personality to win here.

I think McMahon’s 4 year record has been a combination of factors. He came from a long term program building background and that program style was just starting to go by the wayside when he was hired due to NIL and the portal. He was dealt a bad hand to start with having the threat of sanctions over his head but made decent strides in his second year anyway. He had the unfortunate injury to Reed his third year but LSU wasn’t funding the basketball team the first 3 years so the level of talent he was able to bring in was limited compared to a lot of the other SEC programs. Still he never had an SEC caliber PG his first 3 years and some of his portal players just didn’t pan out. LSU stepped up the basketball budget in yr 4 and I think he did a good job of bringing in some portal players that would have helped get them to the tournament but unfortunately Reed was lost again and the PG, a true SEC caliber PG, was injured prior to SEC play. Just bad luck. Still there were opportunities to win some games despite the injuries and he just didn’t get it done. He is not a terrible coach but not a great one either. His biggest negatives are talent evaluation and not adjusting quick enough in game time situations. Would have liked to see what he could have done with a healthy team this year but just don’t think he can recover if they keep him another year. Probably best to go another direction especially if Wade is truly willing to come back.

He is not a good fit here. It’s just that simple. I think he will be let go once we are bounced from the SEC tournament and we will either bring back Wade, if possible, or get a hot mid-major coach who understands the portal/NIL and new landscape of CBB. I expect McMahon will land another position at the mid-major level and do well. He just doesn’t seem cutout for major college basketball at this point in his career. I’m the biggest LSU basketball fan there is, and I hate what our program has become these last 4 years. It’s simply time to move on and I wish CMM the best moving forward wherever he ends up.
