Red Planet is a 2000 science fiction action film directed by Antony Hoffman.[3][4][5] The film stars Val Kilmer, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Tom Sizemore. The plot follows a team of astronauts who search for solutions to save a dying Earth by searching on Mars, only to have the mission go terribly awry.
Even though it got bad reviews and bombed at the box office I enjoyed it.

Something something sci-fi with the girl from The Matrix.

yeah on this note, I've all but stopped reading reviews for the most part because there's a lot of movies that I really liked that are in the 5 - 6 range on IMDB

It's a fairly objectively terrible movie, but also one that is enjoyable to a large degree. Of the two out around that same time, I prefer Mission to Mars. But this one is at least watchable.
Spoilers...
Had they chosen any other route than the robot dog thing going nuts, it would've been much better. But that whole thing was just sort of stupid and took me out of the movie a good bit. I haven't seen it in probably 20 or so years though, so maybe it hasn't aged too badly.
