Buying a vehicle private party out of state

I'm in Louisiana and am buying an old Land Cruiser from a friend in Atlanta this weekend. He has title in hand and I'm paying cash for it. We will have a bill of sale and get it notarized, and he will sign over the title to me.
Is a notarized bill of sale and title (plus proof of my insurance on it) all I need to get it registered here in Louisiana?

Nice. Theres a guy on my street selling a 60 series that i'm fighting the urge to buy. It would look good next to my 300.

Buy it before some 24 year old hipster ruins it, you have the money

I used to have one. Had nothing but problems and absolutely sucked at highway speeds. Could not go over 55mph comfortably because it had a 4000rpm redline, 3.70 axle, and no overdrive. Trust me, you aren’t missing much.

But i don't have the space in Houston. And i don't want to leave it at the ranch because mice will destroy it like they did my taco.

We have a few younger dudes in my neighborhood who bought vehicles like that (or their parents did) and have zero idea how to take care of them
It’s entertaining

Well you have to fill out the vehicle application form, but you can get that at the title place.
Also, good luck. Georgia doesn't notarize the back of their titles and Louisiana does. It very likely will confuse someone at the DMV. You would probably be better off going to a title place instead of the state DMV when you are getting the title transferred/registered

Registration process is pretty standard for most states. As long as the GA title is signed and dated by the seller, you're set. The BOS is meant to formalize the sell amount for tax purposes. BOS isn't needed in GA since they charge a wickedly overpriced ad-valorem tax, but I think you'll want it in Louisiana. Have him write it out to you for $1

The title needs to be notarized as well when signed over.

Very subtle I'm-not-under-court-order-to-not-leave-the-state post.

Thanks for this information. I just wanted to ask because it would be a pain in the arse if we missed one little signature. We'll get the bill of sale notarized and he'll sign and date the title. I'm definitely going to a privately operated OMV to avoid dealing with State Employees.

I bought a used motorcycle from a private seller from South Carolina back in 2012. The OMV required me to get an “Affidavit of Residency” for the seller. OMV wanted to make sure the seller hadn’t moved to Louisiana and failed to register and pay the taxes on the motorcycle before selling it to me.
Might not be required for an older vehicle, but a newer vehicle will require Odometer Statement.

If he has a Georgia title, you don’t even need to get it notarized. You just need bill of sale, title, and a photo of front (AND BACK!) of his driver’s license. And you need to put insurance on it and bring proof of that as well. Out of state titles don’t have to be notarized unless the other state requires a notary (which Georgia doesn’t).
Don’t forget the photo of front and back of his driver’s license. Some of the people at the title places are picky about details like that. It depends on who you get. Also you may need to make sure the address on his license matches up with the address on the title. But again it depends on who you get at the title place whether they’ll actually care.
But most importantly, you definitely do NOT want to put a lower price on the bill of sale than you actually paid for the vehicle. You most certainly don’t want to save yourself some money on tax. For example, if you pay 10k, definitely do NOT put $3k on the bill of sale. You would not want to save yourself money on taxes, would you? That would just be wrong! :wink wink:

I would NEVER commit such atrocities...

I include the Odometer Disclosure Statement on vehicles I have sold or bought (used). Have it notarized along with your other documents.

The style of the 60 is my favorite, but for the reasons listed is why I'm buying an 80. I love watching the repowered 60s on bring a trailer, but those fully redone go for insane prices.
Getting this 80 for a steal, only thing not stock is a 2" lift. Almost all the mechanical stuff has been replaced by someone I know. Will pop a new head unit in it (the factory ones display is out but works), eventually replace the 30 year old speakers and sound deaden the doors when I do that, and likely get it reupholstered. After that just keep it pretty and on the road.
This will be my daily driver. I work from home and live in the city, so I don't drive much
