Help save BREC's historic 9-hole golf course in Baton Rouge's City Park!

The first public survey is available here and open through Feb. 27.

There is an initiative to turn City Park over to an entity controlled by BRAF, LSU and BREC that would likely close or reduce the footprint of the golf course to three-holes of pitch and putt and turn important greenspace into an amusement park.
Here are some points to bear in mind.
1. City Park Golf Course Is One of Baton Rouge’s Most Important Public Assets
• Nearly 100 years old, it is one of the oldest public courses in Louisiana and one of the few listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
• It hosts thousands of affordable rounds each year, serving seniors, juniors, beginners, and working families. In 2025, 28,000 golfers enjoyed a round at city Park.
• It is the most walkable, most accessible, and most affordable course in the parish.
• It is a rare example of early municipal golf design — a historic landscape worth preserving.
2. The Course Delivers Equity and Access
• City Park is the only centrally located public course in Baton Rouge.
• It provides access to a sport that is often cost prohibitive elsewhere.
• Eliminating or shrinking it would disproportionately impact residents who cannot afford private or suburban courses.
• Youth programs, senior leagues, and beginners rely on this course.
3. A “Single Governance Entity” Would Reduce Transparency
Sasaki’s proposed model would:
• consolidate control under a new, unelected body
• reduce public oversight
• weaken Open Meetings protections
• shift power away from taxpayers and neighborhoods
• increase private influence over public land
BREC is the only governance structure that guarantees:
• public meetings
• public records
• public accountability
• public ownership
4. What Golfers Want Is Simple
• Keep the Historic City Park Golf Course intact.
• Keep BREC as the sole governing agency.
• Improve maintenance, access, and ecological performance — not eliminate the course.
• Ensure all decisions are made in public, not behind closed doors.
BREC is doing a survey now through February 27 about planning for the future of City Park. Go to this link LINK

Hackers paradise. frick that place

That’s a terrible take. If they can’t go there then they go somewhere else.

What will you do when all those "hackers" start infiltrating your preferred course with tee shots that slice into the next fairway or 7 iron shots that go 30 yards at a time, while you wait behind them with all your professional friends?

Closing City Park and LSU would create a ripple effect that would impact all BREC courses, particularly nearby Webb Memorial which recorded 56,246 rounds played in 2025.

Webb would become a certified goat ranch -- some say it is now -- if City Park's 28,000+ golfers moved there due to a shutdown of City Park.
Why close City Park? It's a recreational resource already in place. It's used. LSU students have found it and people who started playing during COVID are still coming. Great for beginners and those who want to walk and play.
Improve it BREC, spend some money. Make it as nice as the Audubon Golf Club within Audubon Park (New Orleans). People will pay more for quality and it'll pay for it's upkeep annually. Might even turn a profit regularly.
Don't waste money on an amphitheater, a boat house renting kayaks on the noisiest waterbody in BR (I-10 will get even noisier when 2 extra lanes are crossing that lake) or a butterfly garden. Spend money on the golf course. Make it a draw for citizens/visiting golfers.

Because Jenni Peters is an idiot. Where else in the world can a small business owner try to dictate what happens with a piece of historic public property?

survey taken and sent...

I had problem with survey also. Wouldn't advance from page 1 to 2. Contacted BREC's communications section, and was advised to try using a different device -- different smart phone, i-Pad or laptop -- it worked with another laptop I have.
Don't give up on getting your comments submitted to "leave the 9-hole layout intact" -- and point out that the course could use some improvement as well. Only 1 week left to comment.

I drove by there around 1030, yesterday (Thursday) and the place was packed.
I have no idea what BREC or the progressive little fricks around there are thinking by trying to close it down.

Keep trying and make sure to fill all areas. It did that to me a few times.

IMO the "survey" seems to slanted to control of the golf course and I noted it on the survey...

I’ll do what I can but I really fear typical BR and the stupidity of all of this. An amphitheater would be a complete waste of money and space. A boat house is dumb and also a waste but can be put elsewhere in the footprint of the lakes. Knocking down the course to a pitch and putt will kill it within the first 4-5 years and they’ll push to take the rest of the real estate for some other purpose (probably their plan).
What does the running lady want with this? Another highland road park-esque cross country track? Probably.
Even if common sense rules the day and they leave the damn course alone for now these people will keep trying to push their plan forward.

Very true and a good insight. Jenni Peters and Rolfe McCollister won't stop until the golf course is gone. If BREC gives up City Park I see no reason for BREC to continue to exist.

This...
Public golf in BR is already a nightmare. Getting rid of city park will make it that much worse. BR is at least 2 courses behind meeting the demand.

A lot of High School matches occur at City because finding courses that will allow them isn’t easy since options are limited.
So shout out to Burky for allowing matches at The Island.

Buy running shoes elsewhere. It will be a crime zone without golfers constantly running through.
