Should prisons be racially segregated again?

I just finished watching all 4 seasons of Mayor of Kingstown, a show about a prison and prisoners in a company town where the company is the prison. It's fiction, of course, but as in real life, the prisoners segregate themselves along racial lines. Mostly the segregation is for protection from other races.
I did a little digging and found out that most prisons were segregated before the Civil Rights Act 1964, and then in 1968., when the SCOTUS ruled that segregated prisons are unconstitutional under the 14th amendment. I understand the court's ruling and agree with it.
BUT...
It seems like most prison violence is racially motivated. Would it make sense today to segregate prisoners along racial lines? Of course violence would still occur; they're criminals, after all. But it does seem like it might lower the amount of violence, and maybe even reduce the need for prison gangs.
Thoughts?

I’m pretty sure the prisoners do that on their own.

Yes, of course. As I said in the OP

But they do it mostly for protection from other races. That's the origin, for example, of the Aryan Brotherhood in California prisons. Whites were a small minority in the prison system and they banded together for protection from other races

Yep, there is even a book out that claims the average American commits 3 felonies a day. That is a lot of potential prison labor for a world turning to AI.

They're a microcosm of the racial tribalism that lurks just under the surface in America.

Wouldn't have time nor the energy to fight then. Not would they have any desire to return. Oh but we can't have that.
