Catholics and McDonald's Filet of Fish

Back in the early 1960's, before the Second Vatican Council when Catholics ate fish every Friday, there was only one McDonald's restaurant in Cincinnati. It was located in the Catholic area of the city.
The owner called Ray Kroc and told him it cost money just to turn on the lights on Fridays. Catholics were not going to eat hamburgers on that day of the week. Kroc told him to offer a grilled pineapple sandwich. The franchisee suggested that they also offer a fish sandwich and see which one sold the best. Needless to say the fish sandwich won.
Kroc asked the guy what he was charging for the sandwich and was told 30 cents. Kroc said it cost too much and they could not charge more than 25 cents. So the franchisee bought cheaper fish and added a slice of cheese for flavor. Thus the McDonald's Filet of Fish was born.
Even today 40 percent of all McDonald's Filet of Fish annual sales occur during Lent.
Don't forget to get your ashes on Wednesday.

My maternal grandparents were staunch Catholics, and, like most depression era raised people, were very frugal. Meaning they wouldn't buy us kids fast food at the drop of a hat like we wanted. Except during lent when my grandmother would go buy us sacks of fillet o fishes. Good times.

I like the steamed bun on the FoF but never got why you only get a half slice of cheese

Because it's the perfect amount.

Regular always orders half a slice of cheese on his burger, always laughed at that.
His response was the same, “it’s the right amount”
