Hoping for a lunch stop in Puerto Morales as well.
Secondary question...staying in Aldea Zama. How is driving to and from the Ruins and Centro?

Damn bruh, should have hit me up. I have a badass home in Tulum I would have let you stay at. I've never been a fan of aldea zama. It's giant maze and kind of a ghost town.
I've driven from Cancun to tulum a million times. During the night and day. No issues. Driving in mexico is easy, just watch out for speed bumps and stay in the right lane.
Driving is easy in tulum. Everyone drives slow anyways. Just make sure to be careful driving around neighborhoods, there really aren't stop signs.

I didnt know you had a house there!
We didnt want the beach bc we are going to a resort in Playa Mujeres afterwards and the town of Tulum seemed a little much at night with a family. So we chose the Kimpton to drive to ruins, Xcaret, and downtown (La Valeta too).
The town itself looked a little wilder and rougher around the edges. Was that the wrong read on it? If it were just my wife and I, we wouldn't have hesitated.

Hah, yeah...this is our casa:
We're right next to palma central. Basically centro.
My favorite taco joint is a two minute walk:

No frills. Get the gringas
Tulum is great...only sketchy if you are partying late at night or looking for drugs. Otherwise, very safe.
Awesome food scene, too. Wang tulum is another one of my favorites. Excellent authentic chinese food. Also no frills.

Driving in and around Tulum is a breeze. Took Oceans advice and went down last year for a week. Had a great time. The Ruins at Coba were amazing
