Ran up on some Sandhill Cranes today.

This one looks like he is ready for Valentines Day.





Also saw a couple of Whooping Cranes but they were a little shy of my blind.

Went to two different farms today and there were a pair at both farms. Really cool sounds they make.

I have some in the rice fields around where I hunt in swla from time to time….the sound they make is unmistakable and you can hear it for miles!



ETA: I’m talking about Sandhills…never heard a whooper.

Amazing animals and in my opinion the hardest game bird to harvest that exists. If you are decoying cranes regularly and not doing so over a baited field you are a highly effective hunter. The damned things can see for miles and their approach to other cranes on the ground makes them almost impossible to decoy. I suspect 90% that are shot every season are victims of pass shooting.

Doubtful. I've had sous vide Spotted Owl steaks before.
