Do you guys have experience with pool evaporation happening in winter time? It seems somewhat counter intuitive to me, but my water levels have definitely dropped since that last big rain and front coming through.

I basically never put in water cause the rainfall always outpaces the evaporation effects in hot summer months. Maybe I end up adding water once or twice a year if drought conditions.

I just don’t recall any significant water level drops in winter time. Hopefully I don’t have a leak happening. Don’t seem to notice any obvious issues though.

Pools can evaporate more during the winter due to relatively low humidity. The water in the pool wants to evaporate to try to balance that out.

There are extreme droughts and burn bans in a lot of areas of the south right now, so I guess it is conceivable….

I don’t know if you have a leak or not but I guarantee the majority of evaporation around South LA happens when we have strong north winds. That mostly happens in the winter here.

Yep, you guys are right… it has to be from the wind. We moved right on the lake, and wind speeds up and over the levee were consistently 20-30mph for nearly a week. Plus tons of big gusts throughout the days well up in the 30’s and more.

I think that’s definitely the main culprit. Makes sense now that I think about it. Thanks, I feel better.

I understand the concern over a potential leak. Look up doing an evaporation test. They’re really easy to do and cheap peace of mind.
