Keep cats out of garden

We just got our kids two kittens and they like to get in my garden digging around. To keep them out, I think I've narrowed down my options to using either cat collars with GPS fencing or installing a physical electric fence. Main thing I don't like about the electric fence is my youngest is 2.5 and will be in the garden alot. I know I can teach the kids to deactivate, but it's more of a convenience consideration for all of us.
Any suggestions?

Pretty difficult to stop a cat from going somewhere.
Best you can do is try and give them a better place to do their business and they won't need to go in the garden.

I've used old coffee grounds and cayenne pepper to keep strays away from mine.
We use pine straw as mulch, and it was recommended that we mix in pinecones as well but have not gone that far yet.

My cats make a mess moving the pine straw to poop.

Definitely don’t use a fish emulsion fertilizer - last time I did that all the neighborhood cats converged on my garden.

I have had fairly good luck using moth balls to keep cats away from house plants, etc. I would try sprinkling moth balls around the perimeter.

Had a huge problem with stray cats using my flower beds as a litter box at my old house years ago. One thing that worked well was using a citrus oil spray. Cats do not like citrus.
