Iron Lung-new sci fi/horror based off the video game

Saw this today and absolutely loved it. It’s based off the 2022 indie game of the same name.
It takes place in a future in which an event known as the Quiet Rapture has occurred. For no reason at all all stars, and sentient life in the universe has ceased to exist. The only humans left are those that were on ships or space stations when the rapture happened. The ones left have discovered oceans of human blood on 4 moons that are uninhabitable. The movie starts with the main character, a prisoner named Simon, being forced to serve his penance by going down in a submarine dubbed the “iron lung” and map the ocean by taking pictures and collecting samples. Questions and mysteries are uncovered as he goes. I’ll leave it at that.
It has an INTENSE feel of Thalassophobia because you never know what going to show up when he flashes the x-ray machine to blindly take pictures. It felt pretty tense the entire movie. It has a very HP Lovecraft feel to it and I think is more of a cosmic horror. I will say the one turn off for a lot of people will be that it’s one of those that leaves a lot up to interpretation and the ending is very ambiguous. Highly recommend for any fans of the genre.

Will check it out. That actor was in a trippy series I found on prime called the edge of sleep.

Is this the youtuber movie? self funded and published? saw some stuff on insta about it.

Yep Markiplier. I hadn’t heard of him going into it but he’s apparently a pretty popular gaming YouTuber who directs and plays the main character. He actually did a pretty damn good job with his acting I thought.

My oldest dragged me to this tonight. I had no idea what I was getting into, but it was a pretty good film. Psychological "horrror" but no jump scares or anything. Really well done for a youtuber putting out his first movie.

Markiplier is crushing it & has been getting major props.
I don’t know much of anything about him or his channel but kudos for an amazing job.

Just like the early crop of Youtube Gamers, he got a bit tired with gaming and moved into acting / directing. With the occasional game vid.
Its really hard to tell how many subscribers still actively watch someone on youtube but clearly he had enough to make the movie a success. Especially given it was self funded and it had almost zero marketing.
Initially, it was going to have a small release window and number of theaters but his fanbase made a large enough stink that they moved it into over 3k cinemas.
This was a huge risk because it is such a niche game which makes it an even more niche movie.
I would imagine it will have an enormous drop off this weekend but that doesn't matter. It was already a huge hit.
