We've got a top load maytag washing machine. Here lately during the spin cycle it sounds like an airplane taking off, super loud.

A google search says it's probably the bearings going bad and I've read this can be an expensive fix. The machine is at least 7 years old, is it worth it to repair or should we move on?

Our is the same. 4 years old.

At the beginning of the cycle it's started doing a loud duck quack sound as well. Then in spin it's like a 747 engine, we have to shut the laundry door to hear the TV in the living room.

I spent $500 on a clutch and new springs a month ago. If it breaks again I'm going Speed Queen or a cheap $400 one and not looking back.

I wouldn't repair it, and I'll repair just about anything. It's a real pain in the butt.

It'd probably cost $500+

Honestly, I'd look for an American made GE top loader. They're around $500 new.

I’ve got one that’s going on 20 years old and it has been doing that most of its life. Anytime towels or blue jeans are in it, I have to open and manually rebalance at the start of the spin cycle. Honestly, other than that it has been a damn good washing machine. I wouldn’t dare buy a new one.

This is one without an agitator? Can repair it but the huge plastic disc at the bottom is a fricking nightmare to remove. Will be a good change of destroying it in the process. The middle plastic part gets stuck on whatever metal post it's on. I tried and ended up bringing it out to the trash and buying a speed queen.

Our does have an agitator. I'm sure that will only make it more expensive to fix lol

Thanks for the responses. Looks like i'm spending a lot of money either way I go

That's your bearings. It's not an easy job but the parts usually aren't much. If a GE or Korean brand usually you have to replace the entire tub because of how it's built. But Whirlpool brands usually aren't that bad.
But maytag has multiple designs and what kind of drive system you have really matters how it's repaired.

Many times I quote replacing the agitator plate. Sometimes it's impossible to remove. Easier to smash it to pieces and then remove.
I have tools to remove them. But they still don't work when it's siezed on.

No. Having an agitator makes it cheaper.
They pull out easier.
But maytag has dozens of designs. So you have direct drive or a belt drive?
Is it a Bravos? By Maytag? They sell a special kit to change the bearing. It's really not a hard job.
Just takes about an hour.

Looks like it's a direct drive. Maytag MVWB865GW0 is the model #. It's not a Bravos.

If having the agitator makes it cheaper and easier to fix then i'm going that route. It's been a really good washing machine up to this point.

Does yours have the ability to update the firmware? Ours was struggling with the spin cycle and it seemed to be resolved after it was updated through the Maytag app

Ok. That’s not that bad but you’ll need a spinner nut tool (like$10j and you’ll have to replace the “transmission”. I would replace the shifter too.

Your seal and bearing are in the part that is #12 on the diagram. 15-17 are the shift assembly. The most common part to fail on these. It’s cheap so I would replace that too.

I have one that is about 10 years old and it was so loud you could hear it outside. I bought a kit with oem bearings and a Chinese installation kit and swapped it by myself. It would have been a lot easier with some help. Try it, watch YouTube, you can do it.
