I've got a desktop in my office with a tasty new 5070. I'm looking to buy a projector for a spare bedroom. The projector would be about 35' away from the desktop and about 15' from the main fiber modem/router. The PC is about 35' away from the router. I have no objection to adding wifi extenders if it helps.

I'm a fairly casual gamer, but I would love to have a chance to play games on the projector. I would rather not do it via ethernet. Hardwiring the projector to the modem/router wouldn't be too difficult, but adding the desktop would be a pain in the arse.

Do any of you have experience wirelessly casting a desktop to a projector/TV in this kind of situation? Is it effective? If so, what hardware/software did you use? I don't play multiplayer stuff, so I don't need a super low latency, but I would like to play Cyberpunk and retry some Witcher/Deus Ex/Mass Effect games in the future.

Thanks fellas.

ETA: I did google this first, and included the word "wirelessly", yet it still returned a ton of results about using Cat6 and whatnot.

Low latency video is super tough. It’s why teams, zoom, FaceTime, etc decouple audio from video, and change video speed to catch back up after jitter, so that at least you can have a conversation.

“Casting”will be at least 500ms latency or completely unsuitable for computer use.
The very best network solutions involving video compression are realistically150+ms which is noticeable but maybe not a deal breaker. Your projector may not support those. Not sure. They’re browser plugins.
Direct wireless HDMI(not over your network) will be fine for computer use but I don’t know about gaming.
Direct wired HDbaseT (not over your network) is as good as it gets and maybe even ok for fast games.

Moonlight is the best option for local network streaming, bar none. Not sure how your projector is set up (is it Android based or do you have some other device connected to it via HDMI?). Download Moonlight client for whatever the projector uses and set up Sunshine on your desktop.

Not exactly elegant, but do you have a laptop handy? You could play on the desktop, through Steam Remote Play on the laptop, which is plugged into the projector for use as a display. I wouldn't want to play a twitchy FPS like that, but if you have a strong internet connection, it would likely work fine for the kinds of ARPGs you're listing.

sounds like a terribly laggy setup.

I know. I'll try some of the recommendations here first, and if it doesn't work out, I'll just run wire from the desktop to the projector. That won't be too difficult. The tricky part would be running wires from the projector/desktop to the router, but I suppose that's not necessarily required for what I want to do.

Thanks fellas.

I have used the IOGear stuff before - but just for a conference room - gaming is going to be another level challenge.

This unit says it is a 70ms latency....

Id either run a long arse hdmi cable or an ethernet cable from pc to projector. You can run hdmi over cat5/6 cable. I don't recall the specifics. Assuming you're playing with either a Bluetooth controller or kbm, you'd probably want to look into running a USB cable too, then stick a Bluetooth dongle on the end
