Looking to buy my first guitar

In college right now and have more time this semester, thinking why not. Want to get an electric, even though I've heard it's good to start acoustic. My buddy just got an acoustic one recently though so can combine with him eventually on some jams. I love the sound of the dead and wilco on their electric stuff. Any suggestions or tips on buying?

This is a fantastic guitar for this price. I have one that is the same model, that I've upgraded. It's my favorite electric guitar I've ever owned.
These have a humbucker rout at the neck position, so upgrading is easy.
They are pretty hard to find and this one is like brand new.

Gonna drop a set of Fender 62 pickups in it.

Honestly my first electric guitar was a squire mustang. Really great for just starting out, though I am not entirely sure how much they go for right now.

I bought a new classic vibe Mustang a while back. I liked it pretty well except for the tremolo. I traded it off.
It was about $425.00 new.
A hardtail with the same wiring configuration would probably be great.
That short scale and different tones was fun.

I picked a Fender Squire strat for 150 to get the feel of one again. Its a good all around guitar to jam on. Since got a Guild hollow Body and just added a Fender Telecaster. There are plenty out there, just get one that feels right for you.

I bought a Martin Streetmaster Jr a couple of years back; perfect travel/couch guitar and sounds so much better than the Taylor GS Minis that are similarly priced.

This guitar got delivered about 2 hours ago. Other than needing new strings and intonation, this thing is perfect. The finish is much more reddish than the photos, it really looks great.
It has better saddles than my yellow one and the pickups may be a little better than the ones that came stock in that one.
Probably will just upgrade pots and switch first and go from there.
I said I was gonna put the 62s in it, but I think I will save them for something else. I've got a couple sets of Wilkinson Vintage overwound that I think will be fine for this one if I decide to change them out.

An electric should be easier to play. What you need to do is go to a guitar shop and spend a couple of hours trying them out. Don't buy anything. Go home, think about it, and go again later for more hands on. With an electric, you'll need an amp of some sort. You can get real small cheap ones for bedroom practice. You have to spend $20 on a clip on tuner. Stratocasters have a longer scale length than Les Pauls. Learn as much as you can before you buy. You'll need the $400 guitar "setup", which may cost another $100. Google it.

Some of the smaller beginner amps have a built-in tuner that works well.
I've got one of those 3-watt Orange amps that I use for front porch type stuff, that tuner is money.
