The Spinanes were an American indie rock band, primarily active during the 1990s.[1] The band was founded by and initially consisted only of singer-songwriter/guitarist Rebecca Gates and drummer Scott Plouf.[1][2] They released three albums on the Sub Pop label before Gates retired the name in 2001 and began releasing music as a solo artist;[2] Plouf began playing with Built to Spill in 1996 and left The Spinanes shortly thereafter to become their permanent drummer.[1]

quote:

The duo formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1991,[1] just as worldwide interest in the music scene of the Pacific Northwest was beginning to crest. The Spinanes played one of their first shows at the International Pop Underground Convention in August 1991 in Olympia, Washington.[3] After releasing two singles on the local label IMP Records in 1992, they were signed by Sub Pop, who issued the single "Spitfire" in mid-1993, followed that October by their first full-length album, Manos.[1] Much was made of The Spinanes' unorthodox lineup – specifically, the lack of bass guitar – but it proved invaluable in helping them forge a more singular, original sound. In a March 2010 review, nearly two decades after the album's release, eMusic praised them for having "a sense of negative space that's rare for a rock band", then went on to describe their sound as "Gates's dreamy murmur and resonant, open-tuned riffs up top, Plouf's inexorable attack at the bottom, and nothing but air between them."

Their single "Sunday," with its ubiquitous college-rock drum beat, was such a banger back in the day, with "Noel, Jonah, and Me" receiving honorable mention.

That's a good record... I haven't pulled it out in awhile (Merge reissued it on vinyl a few years back), it may be a good day to do so..

Carol van Dijk via Amsterdam... from their debut Palomine

Also from 1990... the OG Breeders which at the time was more of a side project for Kim Deal (Pixies) and Tanya Donnelly (Throwing Muses) also Britt Walford (Slint) on the drums!! In my opinion, their best record... a little more angular sound than their breakout Last Splash, but that's prob due to Albini producing...

“Mother Mother” by Tracy Bonham was a banger. The entire album, The Burdens of Being Upright was solid. Nominated for a Grammy. In Alternative Rock

The ladies of Babes in Toyland... Admittedly, not the biggest fan of theirs though they are okay... The missus likes them..

Anyway, using it as an opportunity to share that I experienced the rock n' roll weirdness of meeting and talking to former Saints RB Pierre Thomas at their Chicago show ~ 10 years ago... Needless to say I was the only person that recognized him..

Before Exile in Guyville there was the bootleg Girly Sound in 1991... Before becoming part of the burgeoning Wicker Park, Chicago scene, she recorded this in her bedroom at her parents house in Winnetka, IL...

Carla Bozulich... I love this song below..

CSB: The violin player Jessy Green played at my buddies wedding earlier this year in Joshua Tree... she was cool!

If you get a chance, Carla recorded a song for song cover album of Willie's Red Headed Stranger... it's great!

I saw the Spinanes open for Liz Phair in L.A. back in the early 90s. They both sounded great, but Liz Phair seemed to have stage fright.

This is an early 90s indie rock band I always wanted to see live but never could get the timing right. I loved the female singer's voice. They broke up due to heroin issues.

Ha. That was the exact band and single I had planned to post next. Well done!

The college band I was in used to play "Crazy Town," with my girlfriend singing.
