So Ohio State doesn’t call a time out and then they let Miami score a touchdown?

hit a couple long passes and use your TO and kick a long FG … on side kick then try for Hail Mary for tie

It was second down. If they tackle him short then call out Miami could run the next play.
If they score they go up 10 anyway and OSU has no timeouts left.
If they don’t score on third down then they run the clock down to like 15 seconds or so. Again with no timeouts.
Letting them score and keeping the timeout was probably analytical the highest chance of winning. But to simpletons it looks dumb.

This is what people don't seem to be understanding. If they were going to just let them score a touchdown anyway then they should have used the timeout before that play instead of letting Miami run an extra 40 seconds off the clock. You always want to use your timeouts on defense instead of offense. You can get a lot done in 40 seconds on offense these days, especially in college where the clock pauses after every first down.
It was shite clock management by Day if they really let them score on purpose (which is sure what it looked like).

Well you are flat out wrong on this.
Letting them score on first down saves 40 seconds. In your scenario above, hitting two long pass plays would stop the clock and allow them to spike the ball in order to save maximal time.
1 extra play from Miami was a guaranteed 40 seconds off the clock. Ohio State could've ran 5 additional plays in those 40 seconds.
