"When one adopts an ideology, one usually accepts it as a whole; one does not then examine each of the conclusions it entails. And that can be true even for political belief systems much less consistent or thought-through than Soviet Marxism. I am referring to a phenomenon we see all around us: people who accept their beliefs as a package..."

Usually party packages come with the party.

Hard to find pro-illegal immigration people who are also pro-life out there.

Ideals usually come in sets.

And if you are an independent thinker who doesn't swallow an ideology whole, you get attacked for having a mind of your own. You get told you're not a true believer. You get looked down upon for not trying to solve every problem through the lens of a single ideology.

You can't just do the right thing at the right time. You have to do the ideological thing at all times, regardless of consequences, or you're not pure like them. This is how you end up with people supporting ideas that ultimately hurt them and the country, like shipping the manufacturing of critical components overseas to save a buck.
