Looking for an upgrade with a budget of $500 before taxes and set up.
Can I get something in that range with meaningful upgrades?

That guitar has a solid spruce top and is made by Yamaha, it's going to be hard to beat for $500 or less.
What exactly do you want to upgrade?
You will probably do better spending the money on whatever that guitar needs.

To answer your question, I’m not sure.
I’m an amateur.
My daughter plays a good amount on it and I want to give her something moving forward as she goes off to college.
She may have interest in playing gigs so I was maybe thinking electronics on it but not 100% convinced of that.

My suggestion; An LR Baggs pickup system, a fret job and a decent case if it doesn't have one.
Also, it looks like that guitar has a plastic nut and saddle. Upgrade those to natural bone or Tusq.

A/E guts would be the logical upgrade. I recommend the LR Baggs HiFi system. I have sold and installed many of them. They are off the charts for value. The HiFi uses contact transducers attached to the bridge plate with supplied adhesive squares (refer to the photo below). A supplied jig makes installing them very easy. There is a vol and tone control that attached inside the soundhole with the same adhesive tape, and the 9V batt box pouch sticks to the neck block.
It does not change the fundamental sound of the host instrument, it is under $200 street, it's an easy and cheap install via most techs, and it performs absolutely phenomenally. On sale right now at Sweetwater for $172. Do some Google and YT searches for demos and more glowing reviews.

Installed this on the Marlboro guitar that I had. It doesn't get much better for the price.
