HOUSTON — A new report from the Houston Chronicle says Mayor John Whitmire will no longer get endorsements from the Harris County Democratic Party.
The Chronicle says this comes after a group of leaders in the party passed a plan following the mayor's participation in a fundraising event for Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw.
On Sunday, Mayor Whitmire responded in a statement sent out by his office. He said in part, "I want to thank the many supporters. This changes nothing. I will continue to fight for Houstonians and work with colleagues across the political spectrum to deliver results."
In that statement, Whitmire defended his 50-year record of voting for and supporting Democratic values. He also pointed out that the office of Houston mayor is non-partisan, writing, "While there may be differing views, the party has long respected that nonpartisan offices require officials to serve beyond party labels and focus on governing."?
He said there were inaccuracies in the resolution, writing that he strongly opposes ICE tactics and said the city doesn't interact with the agency. This comes after Whitmire pushed back last month on claims the city is cooperating with ICE.

Looks like Harris County’s Democrat Judge (CEO), Lena Hidalgo, was one of the Democrats supporting this move by the party. Very unsurprising from her.

I think it's more the mayor cozying up to the current congressman and making sure they're on good terms so he can be more productive for the city he is mayor of... which is the fourth largest metro in the country. That's a lot of people and infrastructure to worry about.
Democrats are mad that he would be cordial to a Republican politician, even under those circumstances.
