My crack at top half of the league in coaches. I only did a top 7
I think 1 and 2 are clear in my personal preference, but I could flip 3 thru 7.
1. Kirby - I like Lane as a game day coach better but you can’t top the recruiting, game day, development combo of Kirby and the results.
2. Lane - offensive savant genius level. Developed a hell of a lot as a program builder, and the portal king. I’ve always been incredibly impressed by him as a coach. We’ve now got a Sean Payton, Nick Saban type of advantage on game day. That’s how I would feel as a fan.
3. Clark Lea - maybe too high but amazing what he’s done at Vandy. Let’s see it without Pavia though.
4. Heuppel - some of the shine has dulled, but not sure why. He’s done an amazing job. Assume most would rate him lower.
5. Sark - Has had a ton of talent, so hard to tell how good he is. He definitely has improved the program, coinciding with the NIL era.
6. Elko - Maybe too soon, but he’s done what Jimbo should have.
7. Deboer- The dude had a tough task and he’s done a good job by any measure.

I would put Elko higher and Kalen firmly in the middle of the pack. Maybe lower but that remains to be seen. Alabama is clearly coasting on reputation and the talent that brings, but the intensity and drive for perfection that nick saban instilled is no longer there. You can watch any game and see that the program isnt the same, and in a few years we will know how good or bad Kalen really is.
