The F-35 is NOT the best fighter in existence. It has all kinds of bells and whistles and it's a V/STOL aircraft. It's GREAT as a prototype for the next build, but it sucks as a current functional platform.

It's also being misused/incorrectly assigned duty. The idea that a single engine fighter should be used by the Navy as a ship launched offensive weapons platform is flippin' NUTS! Carrier based aircraft have historically been multi-engine for a very good reason. Lose one engine and you still have something to provide power to limp home with. If you only have one engine, you're gonna wind up going for a swim. A long swim.

It NEVER should have gone into production. The Pentagon had spent a shite-ton of money on the development and decided to place the order for so many of them to be delivered for deployment. Top brass has been fawning all over the F-35 just like LSU fans (who were spending too much money for a coach's name) were fawning all over Kelly until the truth became obvious to everyone. The LSU fans, however, had enough sense to wise up and make a change. The Pentagon simply refuses to acknowledge that they bought a very highly polished turd with all kinds of neat options.

Does "historically" include WW2? Because I don't think very many multi-engine aircraft launched from U.S. carriers.
