when did this place get over run by soccer fans?

apparently I have to come back to the original post and clarify, I have no problem with it, just want to know when the trend started. as further discusiion points, please ponder the following:
is it indicitive of the sport gaining more popularity in the US as a whole?
is the MSB a good enough cross section of sports fans to make that assumption?
and after the US bombs the World Cup, is it going to fade away for three more years?

i would rather sit down and watch a good tennis match than watch soccer for 3 hours and have 1 goal scored, congrats, one time in 3 hours you get to go nuts
