I had never heard of this approach. I kinda dig it. Thoughts?

ETA- I love the chorus blend. Some of the delay stuff he did, not so much.

It's better than cannibalism I guess.

I think I need to start experimenting with some pedals. It would be cheaper than buying new guitars.

Where's the fun in that?

I watched some of the Rick Beato interview of David Gilmour. I was surprised at how much variation can go into an effects loop and how the desired output dictates the order (and routing). I guess as long as it doesn't break anything, experiment with what's available until you find something that is interesting.

I mean, Hendrix was innovative back when there weren't options and he did things like tape 2 pedals together and all that. Scholz collected broken equipment that sounded interesting in a loop. Scholz and Gilmour would famously bypass amps in search of clean tones.

Having said that, I have never been much for effects - very minimal and I experiment with ordering them in series to match what is going on in my head. Mostly the usual suspects, chorus, delay and some overdrive, mostly.

I aint gonna go nuts, but several people have told me that a compressor pedal can help me learn chicken pickin better and I would really like to be better at that. A basic looper would probably be fun to play with too.
I like to play very clean these days, so I won't be getting anything crazy, maybe a delay pedal?

I’m telling you those pedals are like rabbits.

The funniest part will be the first of many times you say, I’m done!

Really though, compressors are cool. Don’t cheap out on a compressor. And if your new to compression, get one with metering.

Yea it can be easy to get lost in them. I did that for years before I finally recognized I was screwing with knobs more than actually working on playing and improving my technique.

That's exactly what I'm going to do today. Not that I am discounting your advice, I just have a budget
I'm going to order a Fender Acoustasonic Standard Telecaster, a Korg drum machine and a low end compressor pedal just to play around with.
After the 1st of the year I will be getting a new amp and a better compressor.
By then maybe I'll know more about what I need and want.

How much are you going to spend? Like low level $30 Kokko on Amazon or low level like $100 or so?

Lots of sales going on right now so there are deals to be found. Give me a budget I’ll pick you some.

Probably this one. Just to play with for about 6 weeks.

Trying to keep it below 900 bucks for now, this close to Christmas. The Acoustasonic is $630 and the Drum machine is $140.

That’s a copy of the old Boss compressors. Lots of those around.

If it doesn’t matter that it’s not Zzounds, this is the same price and best bang for buck around

Doesn't matter where it comes from, but zzounds has some really fast shipping. That looks like a great deal though.

It’s an 1176 based compressor and those and VCA comps are my favorite. Think the one you’re looking at is VCA. VCA comps don’t color your tone as much if that is a plus.

I have an Origin Effects Cali76 Bass Compressor and they’ll pry that thing from my cold dead hands.

Thanks for the information Pete.
I'll probably ask you for some more recommendations after the first of the year and I have a better budget for it.
