????HUGE WIN: We forced the Texas DMV to issue new rules to stop illegal aliens from getting vehicle registrations! I've confirmed the new policy to verify lawful status before issuing registrations was distributed to county tax offices late last night. Another massive victory for the Liberty Bots against the Austin swamp! THANK YOU to everyone who melted Gov @GregAbbott_TX 's phone lines to demand action! There is ZERO chance this would've happened without pressure from patriots all across Texas and America demanding action! Now, as always, we must remain vigilant and ensure these new rules are enforced. As the first, and only, elected official in Texas to expose this scandal and demand change, I'm proud to be leading the charge alongside so many of you in the fight to save Texas. Onward!

It’s always amazed me that this was ever allowed to begin with.

You should've seen it when temp paper plates were a thing. It was a criminal bonanza.

So, now illegals won't be able to lawfully register their vehicles.

Will this law keep illegals from driving on Texas roads or does it just exempt them from paying car taxes? What about neighboring states?

Yes, New Mexico allows all residents, regardless of immigration status, to register vehicles and pay the associated taxes.

Oklahoma and Arkansas make it difficult if not impossible for illegal aliens to pay registration fees and taxes on vehicles, but it looks like Louisiana is a little more lax though not technically as lax as NM.

I guess my point is... illegal aliens will either falsify their TX info or hop over to NM to get tags.

I don't see how this move does much to stem illegal aliens aside from refusing to let them pay taxes.

Or, they could just visit Jose's Used Cars in Texas to get a 60 day plate... "To get a temporary tag in Texas, you must visit a licensed Texas dealership where you purchased the vehicle. The dealer will provide you with a temporary metal plate, which is valid for up to 60 days, to allow you to drive legally while the permanent plates are processed. As of July 1, 2025, Texas has replaced temporary paper tags with temporary metal plates to combat fraud. "

It should be required that a driver in the United States can show that they can speak and read English.

Of course it should be.

There are different laws state by state though and no restrictions on what state tags can be driven on which other state's roads driven by licensed drivers of any given state.

My point is- this new law will likely not decrease cars driven on TX roads by illegal drivers- there are workarounds either by registration in a neighboring state or switching temp tags every 60days, or by simply breaking the friggin law.

The only thing that changes is a decrease in revenue... unless they are counting on the "up to" $200 fine for a lapse in vehicle registration.

Maybe I'm looking at outdated info, but...

Texas gives driver's licenses to illegal aliens. So... they can DRIVE in Texas, just please don't pay fees and registration on the vehicle you are legally permitted to operate.

quote:

There is no exact number for how many driver's licenses are held by undocumented immigrants in Texas, as the state does not track this specific data.

However, Texas law allows certain non-citizens to obtain a state-issued driver's license, including those who lack lawful permanent residency, which would include some undocumented immigrants, notes the National Immigration Law Center and Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

quote:

State law: Texas state law permits individuals to obtain a state driver's license regardless of immigration status.

Eligibility: Applicants who are not a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident, and who may be eligible for a driver's license or ID, must provide a Social Security number or a signed affidavit, according to the Texas Global website.

License types: While some non-citizens may be eligible for a regular driver's license, recent federal policy changes have restricted the issuance of Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs) to non-citizens, as reported by Insurance Journal and The Texas Tribune.

No specific count: The state of Texas does not track the number of driver's licenses held by individuals with undocumented status, so an exact number is not available.

has a federal judge ruled this can't be enforced and in fact, illegals should have their registration fees waived entirely?

I don't want their taxes.
I want their absence.

Same here.

This law does not effectuate that result.

Texas seems pretty awesome in how they try to handle illegal alien issues... maybe instead of a $200 fine they will scoop and hold them long enough to turn them over to ICE/DHS.

Most offenses are issued citations, but they CAN be arrested in Texas for driving an unregistered vehicle. Maybe that is the end goal of this new rule.
