The NBA has asked the Los Angeles Lakers and multiple other teams to hand over documents and other property as part of its investigation into illegal sports gambling, @TheAthletic reported.

This is a result of the charges filed against Damon Jones, LeBron James’ former shooting coach who had special access to the Lakers.

Investigators are expected to seek documents, including cell phones and phone records, from at least 10 Lakers employees.

Pro leagues: "Everybody needs to gamble, and I mean EVERYBODY!"

Also pro leagues: "What do you mean our players and coaches and pretty much everyone associated with them are gambling?"

NBA players make way too much money and have such favorable contracts to ever mess with illegal gambling. It’s insane.

Sounds like the players aren't betting, but giving away inside (eg injuries) info that would be extremely valuable to a bettor.

Some are. Tim Donaghy would tip off his partners about what instructions came down from his bosses, like cracking down on traveling.

Porter git one of his associates to get the under on his prop bets and then took himself out of the game. He was especially dumb because he didn't think the sportsbook would be suspicious of a very large prop bet on Jontay Porter. That bettor is either a huge degenerate or knows the fix is in.

Ah yes, especially since they're known for such fiscal responsibility.

You have to include the various entourages walking through team facilities everyday, plus the fringe players that are barely on a roster.

The stars don’t have to be directly involved. The others around the organization can easily gain insider information (undisclosed injuries, load management, game plans, etc.)

Sports betting has long been legal in the UK and Europe. Gambling makes a good thing better.

Lakers players would make a killing just taking the team free throw over every game.

NBA finding proof that the Lakers did illegal gambling only means that the Pelicans will be punished as a result.
