Drone recs?

Looking for a nothing fancy drone to take sunset pictures with and of property. Nothing fancy or professional, but just for fun.
How far can these things fly and still be in range?

Depends on the signal strength. Technically you shouldn’t fly farther than where you can’t still see the drone. I’ve flown mine from my back porch and over 2,000 ft out over the pacific.
I picked up a DJI Mavic 2 cheap and kept it in my car since I get deployed all over. One time in Yreka I went out over 6,000 ft away. Ceiling is usually set to 400 ft which helps keep you in the air space you are cleared to fly (ceiling is 400 ft more often than not).
The mini is cool. Probably a better bet than the Mavic for what you’re looking to do.
I was thinking about getting an Aviata used to get into FPVs. I’ve been working on drone programs for the agriculture industry out here and for emergency response/surveillance

Thanks for the heads up. What are you thinking of getting? I think a Mavic 3 with thermal could be good for hogs or any surveillance setup. Not an FPV.

DJI
For professional use and the best results possible, there is no substitute.
I've owned a few. Yuneec, 3D Robotics and a couple of other no names. They were all disappointing and a waste of money.

There’s a few that will work with the fpv headsets even though they don’t advertise the bundles. Don’t quote me on this but I think a mini 4 and maybe one of the pros are compatible. I need to refresh my memory because I want it before my new years ranch trip. But DJI seems to be eternally out of stock lately.
I like the thermals too. Just not sold on the thermal quality. I’m pretty sensitive to that because I have thermal monocles and rifle scopes and the cheap sensors are garbage and I can’t tell the different between a calf and a hog.

Do you think the thermals are sensitive enough to take an accurate read on a compost pile temperature?

Yeah I think most half way decent ones are good enough for that. The high res stuff is mostly needed for me to get really comfortable with pulling the trigger.
Good example:
I was out looking for hogs and saw something that looked like a piglet on the mid grade monocle. Pulled out the gun and once I got it on the glass realized it was an old fat shih tsu. Ended up being my wife’s cousins dog from a few properties over who got out. I’m really glad I didn’t shoot their dog on accident.

I have a guy I use once or twice a year to come out and do that with my buddies. It’s an unbelievable good time.
One of the things I like it that they use the helo to flush them out of the cedar brush. Kinda want to see if a low flying drone could do the same thing and basically herd them right at me in a kill box.

I have a DJI Air3s Advertises a ideal range of 12 miles under ideal conditions I’ve gone out as far as 3 miles, but if you lose connection it flies back to the point you took off from

I’m looking at using them a couple ways: one idea is like a half dome applications for poultry and dairy farmers where hi res cameras would push their feeds through arc GIS and artificial intelligence labelIMG software would detect the birds, and then a swarm of drones would chase them off. You can put speakers on them with bird of prey calls and use lasers etc

That would be pretty cool. I also want it for running fence lines since I spend a ridiculous amount of time doing that.
Does anyone know what the deal with finding DJIs in stock is? They seem to always be out of everything.

That is if you can get them. Our company was pricing some earlier in the year and couldn’t source the one we wanted. We tried to buy one new early in the year to replace the one we lost. It came with a bad battery and it was not an easy process get the battery replaced. So we had to go with an Autel.
Our drone pilot hates it, but it was the only option at the time due to tariffs.
